Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Layoff Announcement, July 2015

Who announced this, and when ? What areas are affected. I am having trouble believing so much is happening within the last 2 weeks. And who announces this on a Sunday? I will believe it when I see it. The SE was told that it is only affecting the wired lines because AT&T is only wanting mobility and internet (directTv and Uverse

This is a management surplus. Call center reps are bargained for and thus not a part of this layoff.

Will the July 31 announcement email be for ALL employees? Call center reps, retail stores, collections, etc... I was hired February of this year for call rep in a call center in the SE. Should I be looking for another job?

My thoughts....They've known who since October - November2014. But there was a delay, why I don't know. They were given the go ahead end of May. Not 100% sure on this but if you think back and read between the lines on this you'll put it together. Since the last reorg at the top, the company has not been so forth coming on plans. Everyone knows nothing, so they say. 31

Where did the 100% confirmation that L1's won't be affected come from ancient when? Everyone I've talked to either don't know or playing the mums the word card.

Technically 1As are the first level of management. They are generally hourly, support personnel that are not bargained for (Union) and don't have any supervisory duties. 1Bs are the first level that can (but don't have to) have supervisory duties.

Latest 100% confirmed news - management level L1B, e.g.. Engineer levels RF 1, RF 2 & RF 3 are non-affected. Management level L2 is affected, e.g. RAN Engr 5-6 and RAN managers are affected.

Depends on which rumor you are referring to. Is there a mass layoff? Yes. Affected groups in the ATO management population have been notified. No bargained employees in this round.

Is the company getting rid of landline? No. For a whole host of reasons (technological, legal, financial, etc.) AT&T cannot just get rid of the landline side of the business. Are there going to be large scale backs on that side of the business over the next four years? Absolutely. Especially for the folks that work exclusively on the legacy technologies.

AT&T, DirecTv extend 'termination date' for second time. This notes that the deal highlights AT&T's pressing need for fresh avenues of growth beyond the maturing U.S. cellular business which has become increasingly competitive.!!!!!!!!

The statement "TP&E or Technology Planning & Engineering cuts are 5%. Level 2 managers only. Few details provided beyond that so far", was not what was announced on the national call last Tuesday. All indications were that the "Surplus" could affect L1A-L3 managers. Yes they are looking for (possibly focusing on) redundancies in L2 positions however L1A, L1B and L3 may also be affected. There has been a HUGE round robin of job changes in the L4 managers, nobody will say who is making the decisions about who is selected for lay-offs or giving any clarity on how those decisions are being made.

It is very difficult to soldier on when you've invested your career with this company and won't know anything for several weeks. It's hard to sit through all the "rah!!! rah!!!" training, "You Matter" seminars and to read the daily news of how the company is investing billions in other countries. It was about a month ago I commented during a staff meeting to a group of peers and two superiors that we are just numbers and at anytime some unknown person can just decide to erase our number.

Even if I survive this round, I'll be beefing up my skillset and eventually looking outside of the organization. I'm sad to leave the pension behind (I'm nowhere near retirement age or vested) but I don't feel that there is any future stability inside this organization. Many I know will be seeking stability outside of the organization.

The HOUR role in this is good to know as it hasn't been mentioned in this forum. The more details provided about that aspect the better so thank you!

Upper management will not choose who stays or go. This is being exclusively handled by HR. They are looking at past MPPs and skills profiles (and likely some other things they won't mention) to determine who stays and who goes.

TP&E or Technology Planning & Engineering cuts are 5%. Level 2 managers only. Few details provided beyond that so far. No specific numbers or how upper management will choose who gets the axe have been communicated. This entire situation is in direct conflict with prior Corporate statements regarding how much "Our People Matter". Those that dreamed up this process should be the ones to be let go IMO. Thousands of good people are now in panic mode. All while working for a profitable corporation known as a veritable institution of American business. Those dropping this ball are ironically and unfairly unaffected by this. That the Company cares about us is a cruel joke. This Judas act of foul play, greed, and backstabbing can only hurt its image that is already tarnished enough as it is. I understand the reasoning behind doing more with less but this isn't a good way to go about it. Forcing an army of career professionals into a state of paranoia, which this has done, marks a new paradigm of mistrust. There are enough folks with insane amount of years of service to at this Company to yield the same result through organic attrition. Doing so anyway else is ill advised and counterculture to what we've supposedly been taught. Throwing folks under busses should be a last resort during times of true distress for which we are not. Pray for us all. There is still time to correct these wrongs but I doubt that the "higher powers" in Dallas will step up and find a better more humane way. This is a very sad state of affairs indeed.

Most of the high performers in our unit left ATT, disengaged folks are leaving on their own accord, rather than having to be pushed out in layoffs, there's less risk to employee morale. Layoffs are spirit-crushing events in any organization, even when they seem fair to the survivors and the good performers who are left behind, picking up more work and less life for themselves and their families.

You think that the biggest benefit for a company is to adopt the practice, showing all employees especially the really good performers or most dedicated ones , that it's serious about protecting its culture, jobs and tradition, something ATT forgot a while back, instead the company is full of employees that don't value the work place, people who don't love their jobs. And to prove it, it's willing to put its money behind it, sending jobs overseas.
