I was an OSP engineer for 16 years and I believe AT&T will have a fiber and cell network but will do their best to get rid of the copper. There just isn't money in POTS/T-1 lines and they are dying out anyway. A person I work with has a son that works in the UVerse group and he was told that he needed to get DirectTV at this house. The VRAD (how AT&T delivers UVerse via copper) was just installed in his area and they still told him to go to DirectTV, which really surprised us. We need to have fiber to deliver the bandwidth required of business and when I talk to customers they also want/require a 'diverse route' with their fiber. Pretty soon we will be dropping off 100Gb handoffs to dotcom companies so fiber is required for that. Who knows what the company will do but layoffs seem to come from the top down and when Dallas says 50 computer/IT or 50 OSP engineers have to go...then they go. It doesn't matter what your evaluations say. We have 10 people that got the call and some are very good at what they do but they still go the call.

Yes stay silent. bury your head in the sand and all will be ok. ATT will only do what's best for employees. sure they will
Copper is not going away, it will just no longer be with AT&T. As we saw when Randy sold SNET to Frontier. If you read the tariffs, they read "Bellsouth Florida, DBA, AT&T. From a legal standpoint, eliminating pots service would be all but impossible. There are too many companies (Granite, etc) that resell AT&T copper services that they would sue the hell out of AT&T for eliminating the service. What AT&T is doing to migrate customers is to raise the rates on pots lines. They have been going up 20% or so per quarter. I believe that Randy will sell off each state to the Windstreams and Frontiers of the world. This is why there is such a push to move clients from the legacy network to the strategic network. Sales doesn't even get paid on new legacy services that are sold. AT&T is headed into the data collection and advertising business. They are retaining as much as necessary to be able to compile data usage to be able to sell it to other companies. Right now with UVerse AT&T has the ability to sell advertising to companies targeting specific demographics so we could be watching the same show and get a different ad based on who is watching.
@Anonymous134881 - well said. If you cannot contribute, please stay silent.
I have a suggestion for anonymous 134796, Make sure you post something of value, your comment is quite ridiculous, if you don't have anything to say, keep it that way.
The problem is that the stock market rewards the intent of layoffs "to trim down "and ignores the effect on the actual economy. From a shareholder’s point of view, sometimes large-scale layoffs do pay off in the form of higher profit margins and a higher stock price.
At AT&T, The irony is that lean is the ideal only when it comes to staffing levels. When it comes to corporate cash levels, companies prefer to be plump on the side of nearly Rubenesque. U.S. corporations still have close to $2tn of cash sitting idly on their balance sheets, much of it in overseas accounts, as layoffs continue today at AT&T across our nation.
Oh, this is all news to me
