The company does not care if your work is not picked up. ATT is moving to an all wireless company and will drop all wireline and U-verse service moving to cell phones and direct tv service. quietly they are also moving a lot of office and center support work to India and other overseas places. People think they are safe and it will be the other guy or department. Their bosses tell them to ignore the rumors then you receive a request to attend a recorded call from a spineless VP announcing a need to "adjust " department size. As for the Union people, they think they are safe but the CWA keeps layoffs quiet to avoid problems. If you check you will find a lot of union jobs were closed and the union does nothing. By 2018 the company will be down 50 to 65 % and most work will be contractor. Verizon sold a lot of wireline and Fios video to Frontier including Florida, Texas, Nevada and California last month and for some reason no one noticed. Reading the posts here you will see reply's from fools thinking they are ok it's the other guy and postings are not real only stories from some. Chicago was hit hard 2 weeks ago and people were shocked. Chicago is too important to drop people. the Midwest is going to be hit hard as is the southwest. Check your state utility control department and you will see ATT and Verizon are quietly filing for "Non Dominate" status which will allow them to move quicker. The cable company are all in favor and lobby to allow ATT and Verizon to dump to them.

I did some reading on the information in the post and found it to be sadly accurate. Some states don't post the requests but some do and apparently Verizon is doing exactly what ATT is doing. Not sure what anyone can do when the executives have all determined wireless is the only way to go. The sad part is the legacy being ignored and dumping of a system built by many for decades. I'm sure some will still think it's the other guy and some will survive but for how long?
I can only add from an engineering viewpoint, I have never worked for a company less engaged in developing their engineers or allowing engineers to be engineers. I was in Mobility, have all the programming experience they keep saying they want, and I got surplussed. I have no doubt they're trying to move as many technical jobs as possible to cheaper overseas alternatives. Just from an employee development standpoint, they're not only not trying, they actively discourage development. It's very different from anywhere else I've ever worked in an engineering capacity. If you look at Google, the company AT&T wants to emulate, they actively encourage their engineers to spend a lot of time on their personal career development and personal skill building.
Contract Management was outsourced earlier this year to an outside call center in Alabama (CGI). I am certain they will continue to contract office/administrative functions to outside call centers in the years ahead.
This is a good post. I have a feeling that 2018 is a year that most will not be here at AT&T. Even though I only work with very high bandwidth customers with the dot com companies in Silicon Valley, I do believe that I have 3 years and most will be out. If I am here in 2020 I will just feel that I am very fortunate. I do think I will be forced to go contract but I will have about 28 years by that time. If anyone is still working with copper or in call centers you really need to think about getting out of those jobs if possible. But I really feel that AT&T is very ,very serious about making this a very small company when it comes to head count. I feel sorry for the younger people or those that won't qualify for any kind of pension. Good luck to all.
Good post and agree 100%. In 5 to 10 years all back office functions will be sent to India and Philippines. This is very sad. It's all over.
