After 10 years with AT&T and being a top performer, I have been tossed in the trash like a dirty diaper. No one is safe here. AT&T's employee motto of "You Matter", should be changed to "You Don't Matter - HA HA!" People are in tears that they are losing talent such as myself and others. When I am asked "Who is going to do xxx? yyy?? zzz? ppp?? qqq?? My only answer is "I don't know." They have no backup for my position and no one to take on the jobs I do. I will be watching from an external company as the AT&T Titanic sinks. It's only a matter of time.

No disrespect, but I just find it ironic that everyone that is let go is apparently a "top performer." Nothing to do with your case specifically, but is it possible some people think more highly of themselves than is actually the case? Sometimes jobs are pretty easy, and that's why they find them easy to replace.
So sorry Fox9. I was surplussed several months ago after 20 years of service. I too was a top performer with a far exceeds performance rating and had received numerous key contributor awards. Unfortunately, AT&T does not value their top performing employees. Everyone is just a number. Employees don't matter and taking care of the customer is not a priority. Best wishes in your job search.
I was a top performer for years and had very high performance review scores. I was also surplussed. My team's function changed from being national leads on very complex projects to data entry. So, while it sucks, it's kinda like...the job was going a direction I wasn't. So, it's sad and it's frustrating, but AT&T isn't a company that cares about your individual career path in any way. Their money and size will keep them around for a while, but they're pushing quality employees out to keep data entry people and that won't work forever.
There is hope, Working hard does not represent anything anymore, I know people thatI was laid off in March 1993 at age 48 along with thousands of others in Poughkeepsie, mainframe engineering. My story is the same as many of those you have read here. I found a great job and have been there nearly 8 years. I belong to the company union and I love being a union member. Don’t lose hope. Just don’t give up trying as so many of my fellow beemers did. For those of you still atat&t, if you don’t unionize you will be writing your sad tale here someday. Don’t believe your manager that you are safe, we all heard that bull, too. There are 3 reasons people don’t unionize: disbelief that the union will help you, fear that there will be reprisals, don’t want to pay dues.
