Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Here is a nice story told to the press today considering the impending layoffs next week.

Here is a statement to remind the press and analysts on the 31st.

Stankey: Obviously there's going to be some functions that are going to be redundant when you put two large businesses together like this. There's two treasury organizations and two legal organizations. But this is about us growing broadband and video share and making this business more competitive. That growth is going to be really good for employees who are in operating roles. When you're growing you need more technicians and more people to talk to customers on the phone and you do more investment with IT. So the vast majority of folks are going to have more than enough work to do over the next several months and years to get this business operating right, aside from some of the corporate overheads that we're going to have to manage through.

Yes your math is off. If your employee count goes up 50% that means they need 33% less managers, not 50%. It would be 50% less managers if your employee count doubled. 2x more = 1/2 or 50% needed, likewise if 1.5x or 3/2 more = 2/3 needed, 66%. Maybe lack of basic math skills is why they don't worry about who stays or goes.

ya we were told we needed a new span of control as managers, I have 10 employees, my span of control has been 10 for years as has been my department. Now they came to us and told us its 15 employees to each manager and that they would be laying off 2-3% of supervising managers in our org. My math must be funny but if my employee count needs to go up by 50% doesn't that mean you will need 50% less managers overall. My department has about 100 employees and 10 managers (we cover 24x7, 365 with management on staff at all times). With this new span of control math we are likely to lose 4 managers regardless.

No cool aid. Stanley is like Jim Jones. This is another proof that you cannot believe anything leadership says.

The originator sounds like a cool aid drinker. Direct TV is all contractors and wont need anyone in ATT for anything.

When your told the company needs to "reorganize" wake up it's the new word for layoff. And as for the 5 percent, it is more like 18 to 25 percent.

July 31 is the first round and the next is 60 day later.

you know thatt they are not being truthful since they are laying off 5 percent from everywhere. including divisions that have no overlap from the merger. this has everything to do with making the financials look good, thats why they are not touching contractors. Good luck to everyone.

Mums the word. Trust us, ask and we will be open. Ha! I think it's funny that we all have known it is coming but our company doesn't have the balls to come forward and give us a heads up. What do they have to lose? If people jump ship it saves them money and if they don't then they should consider really helping those who don't find another position within the company. We are adults and it would be nice to be treated with some respect. Not bring forth coming just causes employees to do what we're doing here. Trying to peice it together ourselves. Just let us know it's happening already. Ready God them to come forward. Just pay attention to what is going on in your dept. Leaders are already anxious about giving the news. Attitude changes, avoidance of conversations. They are afraid they are going to have to avoid the question.
