Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

My question is to the at&t employees who have been with the company through other mergers.

Will there be many layoffs? And can you elaborate on who and when this may happen. Just from your experience. I know that a couple of managers from my call center have received promotions. I was wondering if their promotions are to replace laid off managers.

If you are not in a group that is considered money generating, your group is definitely at a higher risk of layoffs. For example, all Contract Specialist positions were eliminated in March 2015 (only a handful of contractors were kept). AT&T outsourced contract review to a company out of Canada, CGI. They only kept associate directors to oversee the process and countersign contracts (contractors cannot sign on behalf of AT&T.) This was a total blindside! We were overloaded with contracts and met the 2 day SLA so it was not for lack of work or poor performance. They eliminated a group of very experienced, dedicated contract specialist for individuals in an outside call center in Alabama with no experience... and the most knowledgeable/experienced Contract Specialists had to train the call center group on how to do the job prior to leaving payroll. If your job is not money generating and can be done by an outside group be very concerned. I do believe this is the path to 2020 in an effort to save money and pad the pockets of the executives. Very sad!

Sorry to report that 15 layoff managers supporting Ip products, with 23+ years of service , were replaced by 15 inexperienced workers from the telco side, no experience with I P products of course, just does no make sense, not to say that these telco workers don't even have college degrees as all he layoff professionals had, welcome to the new AT&T, is all about cheap labor, forget about quality work force, that's the 2020 vision

In a word, yes. There will be quite a few layoffs. Some related to the DTV merger. Some related to the 2020 vision. Since your question seems geared more towards the merger I'll try to be specific to that. As to the who and when: Who will be the folks that are redundant. If the combined company has 1100 of a particular position and only needs 950, then they definitely will cut heads to get to 950. I would think positions like installers and customer service would be particularly vulnerable. Probably some finance and accounting folks, HR, etc. whatever departments that both companies have. The when is going to vary by department. Usually they will let the dust settle a little from the merger and the higher ups will take an "inventory" of people and positions and make decisions from there. "Management" positions are usually cut based on past performance reviews at least that's the official word. I suspect there is more to it behind the scenes. Since AT&T is unionized and DTV isn't I suspect that will bode well for the AT&T bargained for employees in those positions and not so much for DTV.

It's unlikely that those promotions are to replace laid off managers. For one, the timing is wrong. But more importantly, AT&T generally lays-off a manager because the position is no longer needed. If the position isn't needed then they aren't going to put someone else there right after a layoff.

Usually when managers are laid off they are not replaced. The company is in the process of identifying surplus managers.

ATT has frequently laid people off and it will continue to do so, particularly because of the cut to an all IP network. Everybody loves technology, IP and the 'internet of things', but continually fail to realise they are building and working themselves out of a job.

If you are not in a group that is considered money generating, then your group is at a higher rick of lay offs.

Call Centres are at risk because we can find cheaper labour in other countries and folks who will work for less. Plus some of those countries do not have unions to deal with, another problem in this country.

We have done this to ourselves and we continue to let it happen. I guess the American Dream is more important.

Have a nice ride.
