Ageism is real

Ah I too miss the good old days when those who were older and had experience could finally make a good living, use their years of experience to lead important work and give support and guidance to the younger folks. When I was young, I greatly appreciated the older cohorts and their advice as I was navigating new waters. They appreciated me for my naive enthusiasm and new ideas. Now, it’s just about who will do the work for the cheapest. Experience and balanced perspectives make for a strong company-we haven’t been strong in a long time and don’t really seem to care about strength, longevity or quality any longer. Just whatever will be cheap to produce and turn a quick profit. Ageism is real.

I think the best path forward for those of us in the 20+ years of experience camp is entrepreneurship. Let’s use our experience and skills to create our own wealth. Trusting these corporate douches will only bring more anxiety and despair.

Fact. It's not just ageism. If you are a tall athletic white guy, you will get promoted very fast. If you are a young pretty white girl, you will become an executive very very fast. If you are a short obese ugly minority, you will never ever get promoted. It's all about appearance and perception. We live in a shallow world.

Fact. We had an upper level manager come into our location and comment that we had a very “mature” workforce here. I think the years of service of our group of 15 ranged from a low 12 years to 30. He followed up with saying that they needed to do something about it, and that we needed fresh blood. If a senior manager will blatantly say that in front of your group, it’s clear they don’t care about us and feel like they are untouchable.

it is all by design noting that they want to raise the retirement age to 70 but you won't be hired by anyone perhaps retail, but manual labor and the migrants are taking those jobs. Mid 50's and worked hard to get where i am at and now the target is on the back.

I’m hoping this will die down some as folks now in their 40s are not as computer illiterate as their predecessors in that age bracket. That used to be an edge that younger folks had.

This is nothing new. My dad was unemployed many times in 70s and 80s because he was deemed too old. They told him to his face back then they were going with younger managers. He was in his mid 40s when it started.

I take comfort in the fact that someday the kids I work with in their 20’s and 30’s will be in their 40’s and 50’s. What comes around goes around. Be careful how you treat people. One day you’re the oppressor.. the next the oppressed. You get what you give kids.. it’ll be their turn eventually.

When parents stopped teaching respect for your elders is when ageism (discrimination) started.
The younger generation wants to start with what it took us our whole working life to accomplish.
They do not understand or know how to appreciate ANYTHING until they have to work and sacrifice for it.
Sadly, they will finally get it after they have lost everything worth saving.
