Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Laid-off and facing age discrimination

I have 20+ years of experience, but I've been seeing more and more jobs not wanting to hire folks over 40...

"7 years exp but not 20+ mid-level role (may not find it challenging/interesting)"

Maybe it is time for a class-action lawsuit. I was called a fossil during a ask-me-anything meeting by A.V. - a tech exec. Followed by being called a dinosaur during a staff meeting by one of his sub-ordinates because I support the HOGAN (Legacy system). It is time for legal muscle on this blatant discrimination.

So anyone who graduated before 2005 is doomed. Dang. 🫠😭

Me too. I am facing the same problem. I am 55 and unable to find. Knowledge is not a problem. I have more than what employers are asking for. I skimmed down details to 7 years and shrunk rest of it. Still not easy. Initially I thought no one cares about my age; my knowledge only matters. Slowly coming to realization that "Maybe" the age is what is stopping me. I am not old enough to retire and not young enough for them, what to do ? It su-ks

Is it ok to use an Earthlink email address on my resume? Somebody told me Earthlink is for older people, but that is the primary email address I have been using.

It is not the 20+ years of experience. It is what you have been doing the last few years and keeping yourself updated with the latest technologies. There are people who don’f want to learn new things and they wonder why their jobs are going away.

Definitely botox your resume. Remove years of graduation from your educational history. Don't include job history further back than, say, 10 years unless that experience is super relevant. Drop older technologies from your skills list. Try to look young in your LinkedIn profile picture. Avoid e-mail domains that indicate your age (like aol.com). Consider tweaking your job titles to avoid looking like you are either expensive or have years and years of experience (i.e., Senior Lead Business Consultant).

I was in the group that got laid off on 6/25. Wasn't expecting it this quickly. I'm 55. I've already signed up with the vendor that assists with resumes and job placement.

Only use the last 15 years of experience, Nobody wants to hear what you did in 2009.
Also, lot's of hiring people lack career depth when it comes to evaluating people. Unless you check all the boxes, you wont get hired regardless of age.
All the older workers out there are openly getting discriminated against. Deson't help that we have the issue squarely in our faces in front page media.

wells goes to great lengths in the package documents to show that it isn't ageism.

when they 'whacked' me, they had a document that showed that I wasn't the oldest, and not the youngest on my team.

I didn't care, but they lawyered it all the same.

and I took the 14 month vacation and retired........

Cheers!

Companies in general know when it is a sellers market. They will do whatever they can to exploit it.

Is it really over 40 these days? I have heard it’s tough after 50/55. If it is 40 that’s insane. In this economy those people still have to work 25 more years at least.

Yeah, it's OK to discriminate against us old folks - but nobody else.

@xqn here. Almost forgot - teams and zoom have beauty filters. Use softer lighting.

Take your college graduation dates off your resume, drop/condense old experience. If the listing says 7 years, swallow your pride and put 7 years. When you finally get the Zoom interview and they see you try to make a great impression.

When all else fails and you rock it, but get the, "Uh, thanks but no thanks, we though you was bussin', but we just need like a different vibe", make sure that you put in writing for the recruiter and hiring manager, "Thanks for your time. While I was hopeful after our many positive interviews over the phone, I understand I sound a lot younger on the phone and respect your decision to move forward based on my appearance during the video call/in person interview".
