Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Manager do it on his own?

We had a recent layoff and three staffers were let go. The overall manager said that he had no choice in the matter. He had to do the layoffs and those he let go were decided for him. I wonder if my manager, who is rather high up himself, really did the selection himself. Can someone who knows explain if it is possible that he received an email with the specific names to be layed off? Or to simply trim one of these positions and 2 of these other positions. I am asking because my work relationship with him over the last 7 months has not been the best. Although just in the last couple of weeks he has seemed a bit more on my side.

No one with the word "manager" in their title is "high up". Not in Hudson Yards organization where ALL authority has been centralized. Unless you have "chief" in your title or "executive", you're a plebe just like the rest of us. Very very few meaningful decisions are in your hands with respect to staffing. He-l, you can't even backfill without begging a Chief Somethingorother for permission.

It’s not the work, it’s how you make the boss feel about themselves. That’s how you play the game.

Not everyone seems to understand there are two different layoff projects going on. Efficiency layoffs and location strategy layoffs.

Managers are spoken to about who to let go with efficiency layoffs. Efficiency layoffs there is no US backfill. There may or may not be a dotted line to India replacement. Location strategy is outside their control. Exceptions to location strategy do exist. They seem to be rare. There is backfill for location strategy.

There also are some really stupid combinations of efficiency and location strategy layoffs, where one employee is laid off for an efficiency layoff, another is laid off for location strategy and backfilled. Two people laid off, one new hire. The net team size was reduced by one. Those running the efficiency layoffs don’t seem to really talk to those running the location strategy layoffs, because the team reduction by one could have been accomplished just by location strategy.

But hey, that needless layoff counted towards efficiency layoff goals, so someone gets to tally it in their PowerPoint deck of accomplishments. That’s more important than the additional severance costs and needless disruption in the life of the employee let go.

There are too many id--ts who have decision making power in this company.

That’s so f’d that they put them in that situation. Honestly if I were a manager I’d rather they just choose for me. Having to make a Sophie’s choice of who’s life I’m going to throw a wrench into would be agonizing.

I believe my manager when he tells me he has had 3 different experiences as of late. The longest one ago was what you would expect, he named names and they were cut. Another he was asked for a list, then some of that list were those let go.

The third was most recent where he was asked for names and one expected one was let go, a second was let go who he was upset about who was not on the list and the only criteria for that individual was his status as remote and no where near any type of hub. Not a troublemaker at any level, quality work and results. An honest victim of the agenda.

I can only speak for CIB, but as a manager, last year they gave me a fair amount of pre-notice for my people (gone by end of 2024), but they told me at 2023 year end that it would be March. Not it seems to be all no notice layoffs.

i once had a boss here who went on vacation had a teammate who did a ton of work but the boss didn't like. Boss claimed he had no idea and then acted like it was just another day. Of course the next week the rest of us had to pick up his work.

I have seen lists handed down that show 5 people eligible for displacement, Manger must choose 3 out of the 5 to let go.

All this talk about it being outside of mgr influence. Surprised to read that, as I’ve been consulted directly. I mean how can a manager not be involved?

Most managers are definitely NOT making the decision. Many of them are upset with the decision because they are frequently the wrong ones chosen. This is a fact.60

The manager gets the email Monday night with the names of the people who are being cut. They notify them Tuesday morning. They have no input on who is cut. That’s directly from a manager that had to cut people this week.
