Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Advice: take the demotion…

Unless you can afford to be unemployed for an extended period of time or this is your path to retirement, I recommend taking the demotion. Some things to remember…

It’s easier to find a job when you have a job. Outside employers don’t need to know you were demoted. As in typical Nike fashion, the organization will be in complete disarray for the next 12 months so you can do the bare minimum just to get by. if you have unvested stock, you’re leaving money on the table by exiting. Use the Nike Nike has used you.

While I mostly agree with you @vgh I disagree about having Nike on your resume helping a ton. Certainly it helps but I always heard about how it was this big differentiator and it’s really not. Maybe it helps get you a screening with a recruiter, but that’s where it ends in my experience. It’s not a guarantee for anything.

Listen, I understand no one wants to lose their job but if you are going to take a demotion, you are only prolonging the agony. If demoted, they are telling you they do not think much of you/performance. It's harsh and I would be pi---d. Sure, you can hang on, keep the check and roof over your head but the market is not as bad as you think.
There are tons of remote jobs still and your skills and Nike on resume does help a TON. Stay positive, I am hoping you are all good and safe but if not, it's not the end, you will be fine.

The “job market” is a very individual thing that works differently for different people. If your skills are fairly generic and widely held then yes, it might be difficult to find new work. If you are specialized enough however and there aren’t a ton of people who do what you do, there are a lot of job openings in the local area.

Most of the posts on this board say “The job market is bad” and that simply isn’t a universal truth that’s applicable to everyone.

@jwt - I agree entirely. But I will say they didn’t cut my pay. So at least I have that.

Yeah, work hard, don't be valued, go through layoffs every 2-3 years in the most traumatic process to then be told you're being demoted and taking a pay cut? No thank you. I value and respect myself too much to put myself through that

@tsm / @gkt - NJX here. Thank you for the compassionate responses and advice. Im still newer at nike and I’ve only been told “this is just how it is here” or my personal favorite “you should be grateful.” Usually by people who have been at the company for 15-20 years and don’t know that not all companies are like this.

@njx+1satRfqa i've been there. No job is worth ruining your health. This is a hard place to be. If you take the demotion, do the best you can to set boundaries. If it gets bad again, take a medical leave of absence. As other person said, find a good career coach and start focusing on finding a new role.

Interest rates high, gas prices high, guess what will corporations do, pass on the cost to customers, and guess what inflation will continue to rise. Powell, Biden, JD all has to go for our lives to get better.

@njx+1satRfqa I’m so sorry to hear that and I wish we knew eachother so I could offer support and guidance that is more specific to your situation.

I’ve been in your shoes job wise, and my advice would be to (if you can afford it) hire a coach and a lawyer to help you navigate boundaries while you’re in this situation.

The job market is for sure bleak but also depends on your level and area.

Before I say this please know that I recognize how lucky I am to have an option to stay at all when some don’t, and I am very grateful for that. But..

I’ve been crying all weekend because my options are severance or going back into a role that stressed me out so much that I lost half my hair, got an irreversible medical condition and made me severely depressed. It was an awful experience and destroyed every ounce of confidence I had before joining Nike. But knowing the job market is bleak, I have no choice but to walk right back into the fire.

As someone who was laid off late last year and came here to support others today, I have to chime in and say I agree. The job market is dismal at best, will likely require you to relocate on your own dime and even then it’s looking like this is a year or more journey to find a job.

I’ve applied to hundreds of roles, have an incredible network who are referring me, interviewing for about 10 different roles, all of which went to someone with more experience willing to take even less pay.

If you don’t take the demotion and your role opens, I’ll surely be applying for it because there aren’t many options out there right now.
