Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Angry and Disappointed

While similar to most folks, I am also waiting for the invites, just learnt that that a close friend and my mentor lost his job. He's been a straight HS for several years, extremely hardworking and collaborative nature and always put the benefit of company before himself. This sh-t is so unfair.

Nike is a toxic environment. I hated to work there. Innovation is outdated and it's always the same shoes in different colors, made in Asia for $0.35, so they can charge over $100. The severance pay was s**t. My then manager said, "don't worry Nike will take good care of you". No they didn't. I hope ON and Hooka take over and Nike turns into the next KODAK.

I was let go after 5 years and did nothing but work hard, almost too hard, putting Nike above everything else. It’s heartbreaking and hard to not take it personally. Worst part is, I hope I can come back some day in some sort of capacity.

The longer your tenure the higher your chances to be cut. It is written on the wall. Not the smartest strategy as we are bleeding institutional knowledge but a pattern that is difficult to avoid observing.

Guess you weren’t around for last CDA. Lost around 40 people I knew personally including my boss.

OP here.. On top of my mentor and friend, now I lost my manager too. Hearing about impact to my direct peers as well. This is really heartbreaking.
I still don't have an invite yet, neither does my team, so not sure what to make of it.

I also know a great Nike employee that got cut today. I hope everyone knows that this is not a reflection of worth.

That is how it usually seems to go. My team was cut in half in February. The high performers were the ones laid off while the remaining ones spend all their time in social Slack channels or planning group lunches.

More so than not, it is the good ones who are let go, the one's that spend their time and energy on creating innovate product and a cohesive team environment vs the one's that focus on managing up and decks.
I'm sorry for the pain you are going through and the pain of your mentor. Sound like you were lucky to have him in your org. Hoping he received a sweet severance package and whatever comes for him next is the next step he wants after sometime unraveling from Nike.
