Possible to volunteer to be laid off?

Has anyone done this successfully?

Yes, I did it at Omnicare. I simply said if there are layoffs and you need to decide between me and other people, you can lay me off and save them if they want to say. I also made it clear I was not quitting and could continue to do my best at my position. My boss never responded to my email. I was laid off along with everyone else in my department, so at the end of the day, it didn't matter that I sent the email. I was gone anyways.

Possible only if you have an excellent relationship with your direct boss.

Like this type of boss relationship......
"Hey Boss, I know you have a number to meet, you know I hate it here so let me help make it easy for you, please put me on the list"

Below poster; this happened at another company I worked for. First wave got nice severance packages. Second wave, were set up to be fired by unreasonable metrics/demands. It’s not unheard of. By super shady.

I heard that if you are deemed to be Terminated you are not going to be able to challenge it. HR has you bags packed already.
You are not getting any second chances or remindiations or courses for improvement. You are gone terminated for Cause, nothing under normal time situations, they picked you to go, you will be leaving. This time around is big and some of you will find out very quickly that includes Management people and whole departments. They call it streamlining. It might even happen by the end of this month if not sooner.

I had a new manager in 1Q23. During our first 1:1, I told them I was applying internally but would love to be on the list if there was another RIF. Thankfully I was on the list and it could not have worked out any better. If you are as burnt out as I was, what do you have to lose?

Last year in the round of layoffs in the fall. My manager outright asked if there could be a volunteer rather than eliminate person who had been deemed to be laid off by the VP.

He was outright told there was no negotiating. If another person was volunteering we would be down two positions rather than one. My manager had zero say who is eliminated from our team and knowing what I know now, I presume he was going to volunteer. he put in his resignation and left CVS not long after.

His role has not been filled either…

There are no layoffs coming. Only terminations. Don’t do it.
