Anyone else have their boss give them a list of dates they are planning on taking to for the year and "strongly suggest" you avoid take PTO during that time to ensure the "team" is covered?

That never works he may have all the right intention but most employees have expiring pto,s in end of march and end of dec and it’s a known fact there is no coverage during this time…also kids holidays have travel high weeks…instead of expiring ptos if it converts to stock or pay would have better outcomes not fair to ask employees to give up earned ptos
What is so abhorrent about this? OP doesn’t state their role in the Team. OP also doesn’t post their feelings about this nor state that their words used here are verbatim from the manager. But it definitely invoked a lot of vitriol with its lack of details.
If OP is a Lead, and works hand in hand with the manager this is a reasonable ask, especially if the team has different operational processes than a peer team. Managers always have peers to cover but that doesn’t mean the team can run smoothly without an internal “guide”.

Chances are this awful “ Manager” likely wouldn’t have a clue about employee displacement until a day or so before. And also could unknowingly be on a displacement list themself.
It’s illegal and you should report them to ethics line.
They may be a jerk of a boss but the silver lining is that they aren’t planning to displace you if you provide the coverage.
for exempt employees at least workday auto approves all PTO. in the past my I was on a team that requires some level of coverage my manager put in place a system where if multiple people were requesting time off and there was t enough coverage then the personal with most seniority (been with make longest) got preference.
Yep. Especially for smaller teams that can only have 1 person off at a time due to staffing concerns. A manager can decline any PTO days if there are staff shortage concerns per firm policy.
Now if I read your post correctly this is the manager’s own PTO. That should not affect team coverage unless they also do the job duties (unlikely).

I’d have a ton of questions AND pushback about this “I strongly suggest” approach. This is not how a team gets covered. Just NO. You are not a dumping ground and your Manager appears to have zero business having a Manager title.
