Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T finds out what happens when you run a skeleton crew

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/02/atts-botched-network-update-caused-yesterdays-major-wireless-outage/

This is what the media is running with.

The sad part is, leadership will blame the guy who pushed the update. They don't have the backbone to say it like it is: Last week's outage is the result of the struggles stemming from a record number of layoffs within our company. We expect this is only the beginning and will probably see breakage in the coming months/years.

It’s happened before. Internal wide systems in November 2022. It just didn’t affect wireless like it did last week. Legg bungles this over and over and it will happen again.

@1vbn+1rerZuJI ATS won't take any heat for this - they never do.

The main reason is that the team investigating the SDR doesn't have the technical background to determine the root cause. So, that tech work for the investigation?

Yeahhhh, they have ATS do it, as well as the root cause analysis. And you better believe that anything that paints them in a bad light, will not be present.

As to the missing configs, I'm guessing Cisco 42xx boxes? Because, yikes...

It is called sacrificing talent for location. The folks that are not good enough to find another job will go where ever the job requires them. The people that are competent and can find another job will not "follow the work".

Always interesting to see bargained for employees who seem to know everything about everything EXCEPT the functions of the job they’ve spent 20yrs occupying. LOL

“No bargained employee asks to work on Saturday, no one.. They are forced.”

Wrong. You’re 100% wrong. We have people with time who preference for a Tues-Sat tour. You’d know this if you were paying attention.

The issue wasn't having a smaller staff but rather lack of technical skill and ability.

Skeleton Crew - GTFOH.

I have been on hundreds of MFAB calls with literally hundreds of people. Listening to the burping, sneezing coughing and F A R T ing in the middle of the night, all night long is painful. All the management wants is a scapegoat to either fire, or provide an unpaid vacation.

The only one not on the call, and the one that needs to be fired is the Stink!

They’ll be some managers fired for this outage. Mostly white but some black lgbtq’s also. Maybe far east and near east.

"There are methods and procedures that have been in place for 40+ years to prevent such a thing. "

Hahaha. . . . No.

This might be true if you're applying it to software or hardware from the 80's.
( Which we still have in the network btw )

Guess how much lab testing is done on new hardware and / or its firmware ?
( Hint: Nada )

We ask Tier III ( ATS ) for a configuration build on a brand new Cisco unit and they just throw their hands up and play d-mb. WE have to come up with the configurations without a lab environment to test them in.

You can guess how well that goes. :|

They should add a new question to the " Ask Yourself " principles.

That question being " Why am I still working here ? "

Have you ever looked at what some technicians actually accomplish on a Saturday? I just did and it’s sad.

No bargained employee asks to work on Saturday, no one.. They are forced . What do you do on a Saturday? What value do you add to AT&T. Costco/ Walmart or child care runs do not count. Will not matter much longer for you.
You know why.

I went to work for AT&T and we strived for 5 nines reliability. It was something we worked for and had pride in. 99.999% of the time the network would work . We were proud to restore service,

Mr. Anything can happen during a cutover.
Yes, very much can happen after a "cutover", much of that will happen after you are gone .

ATS should be blamed for this, if they were not standing by when the implementation was done.

AT&T needed more workers to get paid and stand around doing nothing during the outage. Get paid OT.
