Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

FTE vs ETW

If Nike hires contractors, ETWs, so that it can flex staffing up and down depending on business needs, then why are only FTEs bring hit with layoffs? Rational leaders would look to cut contracts first. It's becoming a company of contractors with no benefits and constant churn of people. So wasteful. No leadership strategy.

you are an id--t. the same vacancy will cost more to hire a fte over a etw. you clearly have no clue how outsourcing works

most all ETW roles were cut around october. you'll notice most ETW roles are Admins supporting Sr Directors and very critical niche roles

@1yxw+1r6cphfj you are right here:
'We’re stressed too. All the responsibilities none of the “safety”.'

Lots of people on this site hate on ETW's and belittle the risks of their situation, without questioning or critiquing the leaders who have made conscious and deliberate decisions to continue operating in this way, at scale, for years.

Etw is not cheaper most of time when loaded. The Nike Bennies are no more than provider markup for us worker. Why do you think Nike does etw conversion ? All wage related costs sit wage gl accounts. There is no difference. It’s all sga. Yeah the accounting ones in India might be cheaper but the work product is no bueno. Then you hire usa etw and savings go poof.

ETW here. We’re stressed too. All the responsibilities none of the “safety”. With the FTE layoffs coming many org shifts could result in our contracts ending. If they don’t end we are going to be overworked until end of fiscal when the next phase is expected. This is going to be rough all around. Wishing folks the best of luck especially those who have dedicated so much of their career to Nike.

@ngn not in Oregon. We can leave our ETW post/our contracts can be terminated at any time.

I think the , “ new now” is hiring temporary folks and cutting permanent folks because of cost savings. We've already farmed out our finances to Accenture in India and got rid of permanent people . Have you looked at LinkedIn lately? Tons of Nike jobs. I thought we were in a freeze?

ETWs can stay for 24 months now. That change came with the shift from Flex to Next/Beeline.

Contracts are for fixed terms with enforced early-termination penalties (payable to the contract handler, not the contract employee.) They will adjust as they get room to do it (by letting contracts stay dead, reducing the headcount on renewal, or similar), but they cannot just arbitrarily cut loose contractors without it costing them even more money to do it.

FTEs could have given up their hefty bonus payouts, and jumped over to being ETW last year if they wanted !

Speaking as an ETW, the notion that I’d still have a job if Nike cut my contract or that we have more benefits is laughable. The reality is ETWs have been being cut for months now, especially towards the end of last year. The ETWs that remain are feeling anything but safe.

I work full time for Nike exclusively, doing the same work as my FTE counterparts. My agency has already told me if I’m cut I’m out of luck with no severance package. My department has been alienating ETWs, removing us from meetings, and keeping us in the trenches with busy work for months. Believe me, the grass is not greener on the other side of the badge.

Huh? FTEs have far make benefits than contractors. Ask any ETW who has been perpetually extended with the carrot of a black badge dangled in front of them. No 401k, no recognized tenure if they do convert, and no development.

ETWs come from a diff budget. FTE headcount and how it goes up and down is important to Wall Street. Whether we (as FTE or ETW) like that reality or not, it makes business sense to keep a portion of workers ETWs because it allows for more and quicker flux to process and budget and bodies without reporting to the public.

They cut ETWS and travel first. Then fte. Many people think that etw are cheaper but once you add the provider mark up often times the answer is no. And after12 months they have to leave due to co employment risk. So you train and then they leave.

Agree! Nike should be focusing on to retain more FTE in place of contractors who will atleast have job even if Nike ends their contract and get into different client projects! Interest to be always safeguard FTE and reduce cost by removing more ETW as they are temporary workers in compared to Full time Employees! Employees should have more benefits than contractors!

From what I see in Global Tech there are still a lot of ETWs around.

Most ETWs were gone at end of 2022. I expect the few that are here still are gonna be gone now. And if you don’t have many ETWs in your area, that’s where the layoffs are gonna happen probably.

They are. Just a lot more quietly bc it doesn't need to be disclosed. Our department in marketing lost 100 ETWs end of calendar year — they who were ended early or not renewed.

A lot of ETWs were impacted already last year, 20%. They did start with ETWs and will again after second phase.
