Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Does anyone with 10+ years feel like they have job security

It seems like more of my coworkers with 10+ years are being targeted by management for minuscule things being retaliated against

I really wish most of the field folks that comment here would realize that and stop bashing these folks.

It's mostly in response to ignorant comments regarding the contracts and surpluses of union people. There is without a doubt more job security in a union job than "management" jobs.

Not sure why these management dolts can't get this through their brainwashed minds. The contracts have black and white, gold standard job security language.

Let’s just say you have 2-3 years left on a contract. What do you think is going to happen near the end of that contract.

It gets renewed and I keep working. If they want to go down in headcount they announce a surplus and follow the steps including buyouts. The contracts are publicly available on every local's website.

its obvious most comments here are folks that are classified as "management" so yes the company can do whatever they want with you!
Name of the game is to be move around different departments where your seniority will matter some until you get your 25 years!
sorry this only works for union people!

Glad I don't have to worry about my job being eliminated. #UnionContract

I haven’t felt secure ever. Anything can happen, everyone is expendable and replaceable.

Almost 30 years and absolutely not. Busy as heck but waiting to be asked to leave.

No. Even if I were saying yes to moving, I wouldn't have any. Unless I move offshore.

No. I would never consider a job anywhere to be secure. This is why I have a hard time understanding why people throw their entire life into convulsions to get extra work done and impress people. In the meantime, they lose their husbands or wives, they do nothing with their kids, and they become the most miserable people on the face of the planet.

“Management” is in reference to office workers. They are only called “managers” to get exempt status, no OT, etc. They manage no one, make no decisions on employment of others, no real business decisions (other than what color the graphic might be), they are usually number crunchers or project people. I really wish most of the field folks that comment here would realize that and stop bashing these folks.

I suspect that managers are being rewarded with incentives for reducing headcount.

“Yes. I have a union contract.”

This is exactly what union leaders want you to believe. Let’s just say you have 2-3 years left on a contract. What do you think is going to happen near the end of that contract. Not to mention the geo changes to the jobs during the contract that the union can do nothing about. Call centers are a great example of the impotence of the contracts. Wake up.

You are a number. Plain and simple. A friend of mine moved from Atlanta to Dallas about 5 years ago to keep his job. Was laid off last year. They don’t care about you, your family, your goals or dreams. You are a number. Get out while you can, and whatever you do, don’t uproot you or your family for them

“ no job security since I started here 20 years ago. Just play the game for as long as you can.”

About as real as it gets. One eye on the road the other over your shoulder if you have the stomach for it every single day.

No. It is clear that all employees (except the C levels) are expendable as soon as they find a way to get you off payroll. Regardless of the impact to the business.

Absolutely zero job security. I love my customer but feel like I am on a ship with no rudder which has resulted in being in it for the pay only. I converted all personal services away from AT&T, I am saving over $50 a month with T-Mobile and have much better and faster coverage.
