PIP

I was put on PIP todays(rating 1). I was told my manager and he will be in a call next week. They mentioned it's a 90 day plan.

  1. I assume if I get terminated after 90 days, I won't get severance.?
  2. Will I lose all benefits the day I get terminated?
  3. What are the chances anyone comes out of PIP successfully at wells

Seeking input.

You guys are lucky to have not seen it happen before. My group has had many. It’s a mess! Managers are quitting all the time. everyone in group is miserable and looking for a new role. The expectations to be able to deliver in chaos is what does many people in. be grateful that you have a manager that has not re- orged your job four times in the last year. Everyone has a breaking point. Moving people into new roles , and expecting them to deliver with Skills that don’t necessarily match up to the job makes it very difficult. We’ve had many people in that position, which is really unfair.

So much misinformation. Not signing may feel good but has no practical impact on the process. People come back from PIPs all of the time. I've had two employees that were on PIPs before joining my team. One currently makes close to $200K and held a management position AFTER being on a PIP. The other has had a long 10 year post PIP career.

Getting on a PIP isn't good. Odds are that you will be displaced. But it isn't a for sure thing. If you want to stay work like crazy. Document your progress against the PIP.

when I got terminated I wasn't even put on a PIP, my manger just called to say hey you need to improve your performance a month later "laid off"

You have to truly truly struggle at the basics of your job to be placed on a pip here. It’s not a good look for you and you should do some hard soul searching

If someone gets PIP’d they absolutely deserve it. You can’t just toss an employee on PIP without heavy documentation so it doesn’t matter if a manager is “out to get” someone. Literally takes months and multiple meetings to get to this point.

Pls do not sign the PIP. Verbally acknowledge receipt and plan on being released by the next pay period and no later than 30 days. HR is following procedure, available via our employee handbook, which you should quote during every interaction regarding the PIP > termination workflow. Wishing you the best and keep your head up.

Your benefits last until the last day of the month that you are terminated.

And no, you wouldn’t get severance because you will be terminated for not meeting the job expectations.

You will sweetly tell your manager, I'm sorry, I cannot sign this as then it would appear that I agree with your assessment of my performance.

What happens next is:

  1. Your manager might visibly start shaking or cr*p their pants because they never expected that you would not obediently do what you were told.
  2. They will say, you have to sign it.
  3. You say, no I can't.
  4. They'll say, you have to.
  5. You say, I'm not signing it.
  6. They'll say they have to talk to HR (because they don't know what they should do)
  7. HR will have them write 'refused to sign'
  8. Since it is about you, you are entitled to a copy. Make sure to get it.
  9. You can verbally acknowledge to your manager that you received the document, understand what they want you to do to improve your performance, and you will do your best to do so. You go back to work and try to perform better so that you can come off the PIP.
  10. They are required to give you feedback on if your performance is improving or not, and when the PIP has concluded (even though you haven't signed it)
  11. If your performance improves to what they want, all is good.
  12. If not they will continue to document how you are not meeting expectations.
  13. Eventually they can fire you even if you didn't sign, but at least you may still be able to collect unemployment.

@1orj+1qIUUAXT Are you sure about that? We’re at-will employees and can be fired for almost anything that doesn’t violate civil rights or whistleblower protection laws. I’d think refusing to sign could be insubordination and hasten or immediately prompt termination.

I hope you didn't sign it. You can refuse to sign anything. They can't make you. They will tell you that signing it merely acknowledges that you received the information. Not true. Signing it gives them the ability to easily move forward with termination. Not signing it is a clear statement that you do not agree or accept their assessment of your performance.

  1. I’ve seen it happen, but not often. The fact that you are a 1 means either you are in the wrong type of work - it’s ok, that happens in life. Or your manager really just wants you gone.

I’d recommend getting your resume up to date and applying outside of company for a role that you will be more likely to thrive in.

Once you are on PIP it is because they want the person terminated but they have to follow the HR process. I am sorry but I have never seen anyone survive after 90 days, normally the action plan isn’t reasonable. What was the reason for PIP were you not showing up in the office 3 days a week? It is really hard to get out on PIP, normally it’s when people aren’t showing up for work or MIA during work.

You'll get some form of corrective action before moving to termination. All terms need to be vetted through ER. You wont get severance if you're terminated for poor performance. Duh.
