Several folks I know moved away from telecom altogether and they've never been happier. Knowing that convinced me to widen my job search and I can tell you already there are many more opportunities than when limiting yourself to a few major players in the same field who all have the same issues.

Regarding the pension:
The good news is the Feds think they'll reduce interest rates next year.
The bad news is people will need to stick around one more year since the pension lump sum will be based on Noember 2024 numbers.

That's a pretty big step to walk away at that stage of the game. I would have stuck it out, but with your salary increasing by $45k / year it sounds like it will put you slightly ahead in the long run. Best of luck.

22 years with AT&T. Four years from retirement, or the rule 75 and didn’t want to move to Dallas. Somehow I got lucky and got a job at a company called Equinix (data center). Culture is 10 times better and I make about $45k more a year. However, it was tough as heck to get these golden handcuffs off ( pension)

plenty of telecomm jobs in the market with independent isp's, data centers, etc.
that said i will move away from ip tech all together and probably expand in small business.
I work a fairly easy union office job. Wages plus pension value increases my next 10 years are worth about $140k per year. I'm not leaving.
I'd steer anyone away from a telecom job - industry consolidation has led to fewer jobs and the big three telcos see employees as disposable.
