Anyone who has been laid off did you have any clues it could happen ? Like any weird system emails or anything? TIA.

Your manager was playing games with you. Performance rating means nothing to them, they can manipulate it any way they want to. They have 100% control on who to keep and who to let go.
Im confused. My midyear was Inconsistently meets, then year end was meets! Then given a raise and laid off. Did my manager pick me?
I am a mid level manager. I agree with @6yfo+1pupYlbC. If my executive boss tells me to get rid of a few of my team members, I am forced to downgrade their performance rating to inconsistently meet no matter what. I typically come up with vague or exaggerated criticism to artificially lower their rating, it's not that difficult. Many managers have been doing it, this is not new. It's just a survival choice between me or them. I will not sacrifice my career to save my subordinates, they work for me, I don't work for them. This is not our fault, it's all WF's fault for creating this kind of environment.
@1jbz+1pupYlbC - you must be DE&I selection.....keeping your job with that many negatives
F Charlie and F WF. The managers here are the worstt
You have to understand that if managers can't come up with headcount reductions, managers get screwed and potentially lose their job. We can't have that. We managers also have a family to support and a mortgage to pay. Don't blame us, we got to do what we got to do, sometimes managers have to lie to survive. My executive bosses are doing the same thing to survive. If you are in our shoes, I am sure you will lie to survive too.
But there is something about senior executives though... no matter how poorly they perform, no matter how unpopular they become, they still get to keep their job... like TK.
Yes, then managers have to somehow come up with fake performance evaluations and downgrade their ratings to IM to get rid of those employees.
Remember, if there's a layoff, your manager was asked to provide names 2-3 months before the actual event. They might not know the exact date but they know it's coming and they know that you are leaving within 2-3 months. It takes time to build all the exit packages but they know in advance.
They will either start to disengage from you, fewer meetings, not really caring about what you are working on, and not having career and development discussions OR they might be the more compassionate type, and have the event weighing on their conscience so they will have more development and career conversations to prep you for what's coming.
8 months before they provided the displacement pre-notice, we were told they would be consolidating two office locations into one effective September. Over 300 people got the layoff notice last week of August (a Tuesday after payday) Looking back, the consolidation of office space seemed like a precursor.
When the manager suddenly acts very caring and starts having conversations like “Have you thought about career growth and want kind of roles interest you?“
We were constantly told to make sure our personal contact information was updated in Workday.
We had to keep a track of what we were doing daily.
Nitpicking
All of the sudden 1:1 meetings canceled.
We were actively hiring for my role at my site until the day of the layoff. Managers said they were told the night before. We got a meeting for a "quick pullup" or something from our two-up manager just an hour or two before the meeting was scheduled on a Tuesday after payday. I'm being laid off 2/13/24. I work in a site that has had almost no opportunities posted for years now. I think the goal is to shut down the site completely soon. I work in a role that's not hiring in India. They're replacing us with folks who work in hubs.
The Indian guy who replaced my position was very arrogant and had an attitude problem. Those offshore guys think they have upper hands on us and become co--y. I have no sympathy for the Indian guys if they get screwed by the erroneous information provided by the American employees who are getting laid off. I support what @kro+1pupYlbC said.
If you receive an unexpected meeting invite for Tuesday morning with your manager, just decline, or propose a new time for one week later. Block your manager's phone number, and set your Teams' status to busy all day.
You’ll receive an email on a Tuesday morning for a “quick huddle”
Staff employees are just pawns. Pawns exist to protect managers in case something goes wrong so that they can throw you under the bus.
My clues are plentiful:
- Manager saying I am targeted for layoff (2018)
- Manager saying I am targeted for layoff (2019)
- Manager saying I am targeted for layoff (2020)
- HR giving me a relocation/resign option (2020) - canceled due to pandemic
- Manager saying I am targeted for layoff (2021)
- Manager saying I am targeted for layoff (2022)
- Manager saying I am targeted for layoff (2023) - twice this year
- Manager not including me in future-state projects
- Manager not caring if I am online or not
Yeah I still work here! Why? (i know, i know)
I hold my manager accountable for everything that is happening to me and you should too. If he/she did their job and helped you grow and get exposure like a leader should, you wouldn’t be in this predicament!
You suddenly get a 2 on your year-end review, and was told you're still awesome, but not as awesome as most of your peers. And trivial things you did, that were never discussed, are used to blind-side you, and you have no way to appeal them. Or for any reason at all.
We were told to make sure our workday was updated. That was the clue
I have the list. I’ll dig it up tomorrow. Don’t ask why I know….
Likely no layoffs now through the end of the year for any LOB. Look for layoffs to start up again Feb 2024
There are also a few LOB specific specialized hubs.
For example, IT will have one in Columbus.
The hubs are NYC and San Francisco. The 6 core locations are Charlotte, Chandler, Des Moines, Minneapolis, Dallas, and St. Louis
If you're a resident of CA, this CA Bank doesn't want you and your job protections. Hint, hint.
"why should we be kind to those who take away our job?"
Correction: Why should we be kind to those who give away our job?
I’m clearing out my office next week. That should give my employees a hint or two.
If you get laid off, resist the urge to stand up on webcam and expose yourself on Teams.
Can someone list the hubs? Our CEO had the gall to say he didn't know what an employee was talking about when the employee mentioned hubs -- he said he knows nothing about hubs or a "hub strategy".
Some say there's a list, but it's not a published one. And some areas have permission to hub in areas that others can't (?)
When your manager is displaced. Likely you will be next.
First hint would be, working for a lazy, insecure, incompetent manager.
Wells Fargo folks I work for an equally cr-ppy FI - are all of your remote positions being eliminated? Can’t get straight answers from my Mgt.
Hunger Games baby! I am sure Charlie is enjoying this.
I don't care what our managers or executives tell us, I am not going to train the offshore team. I would pretend that I am training them, but I would definitely give them a lot of incorrect information and sc--w them. No matter what we do, our job will be replaced by the offshore team anyway, why should we be kind to those who take away our job?
Something similar happened to me before some of us got let go. Our department hired several offshore employees and we were told to train those new hires in India. As soon as our manager announced that our team might be downsized, everybody started turning against each other (I think it was a brutal survival instinct).
I was told to train an Indian guy and teach him everything I do. Also a couple of team members suddenly started backstabbing games against me. One month later, my job was 100% outsourced to India and I got let go.
Are you in the United States? Are you anything but an executive? Ok, here's your hint.
Where are all the approved hubs?
In our group, a couple weeks before they laid off a third of the team, they asked the whole group to make sure their contact information was up to date.
