How many more times do we need safety managers to come out to our sites and repeat the same dribble we hear every other year when they're there. They never tell us anything new, just the same blah blah blah blah blah all the time! Yes, their expense is a waste of money if we can go online and learn the same stuff!
“ The “Texas Safety Team”………You union folks are ridiculous. Is it really that hard for you to use Webphone and spend 5 min learning your organizationons structure?
Can’t wait for you fools to strike in D6. Gonna be cake money in my contingency assignment.”
You ever consider that management titles are not important enough or the job functions significant enough for the real employees to look them up?
I like when they cut teams as a "cost savings" initiative. then wait a few years and bring them back as also a cost savings initiative.
Safety Team at at&t is a waste of oxygen. They have always talked the good talk but that's about it. They have always been a tremendous expense to the company with zero return on investment. This elimination of all the multitudes of safety personnel is way past due. GOOD RIDDANCE SAFETY DIVISION, DONT LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON YOUR WAY OUT!
It’s funny how they are all about safety until it cost what they deem, too much money. My work center has double swing gates that are manually locked with chain and padlock. The area has homeless roaming around that has broken into nearby buildings. To access the gates we have to get out of our vehicles then manually unlock the padlock for entry and exit, then close and relock it. It’s dark in the mornings with low visibility around the area, we also are forced to work late a lot through the summer and have the same operation at night for entry/exit. Very easy to be as--ulted while trying to access or lock gate upon leaving. I’ve had people surprise and walk up to me while accessing or locking the gates.
Brought it up to and sent emails to the building manager, 2nd level and CRE but was told, sorry, we don’t have the budget to automate the gates now, the area isn’t really that bad. The company spends more money on execs renting a house for the week while at a golf tournament than it would cost automating a gate for my work crews safety.
So safety matters only for discipline, job justifying and compliance videos. When it comes to expense, well it’s not that bad, we will address the issue after someone gets jacked or knifed, until then take your chances.
They also charge the 1st line managers to find safety infractions too, because no one is perfect. Heard that so many times till I’m sick of it. They never can find a deviation on me so I’ve had to help my manager out more than a few times and give him something minor for him to show a deviation and correction in my safety record because he is a good manager and we don’t want to lose him. They can’t be truthful and show what they find, messed up but it is, what it is, play the game.
Yes, we toss out a bone for them to chew on.
Something real that could cause a problem (would cost money to fix) that we have dealt for decades. No we are used to that and deal with it. Don't care, we will let someone else deal with it after we retire. Same as it has alway been.
Texas safety team

This is a good thing. This will save the company money.
I will completely help my first line conduct this task.
Safety and MSOC managers are a complete waste of space. They provide no value and just cost the company more money. They're just as worthless as HR.
Hey sometimes they find and old microwave oven in a closet that has not been used in decades after you let then into the CO for some strange reason.
You never know......

All safety training is based on various retraining times to be in compliance. Some yearly, others every 2-3 years.
Entire safety team needs to be eliminated immediately. They are just like HR, totally worthless. Safety team could care less about your welfare as an employee. Remember back when they were trying to promote the female gender to outside craft jobs. They presented a picture of a female, on hooks, on a pole, on her butset. NO hard hat or safety glasses. What a joke, it didn't take long for all outside plant technicians to raise holy he-l!
Have things changed with safety training or are folks still taking the same training numerous times to have something “productive” to charge their time to?
I remember someone in history who said, “let them eat cake”, didn’t work out well for her either. Good luck on your contingency assignment but don’t expect that to be your only one. One that has your inflated ego is surely valuable and deserving of more challenging work. Maybe finding a wet pressurized cable in a manhole run or buried multiple copper damage and repairing it, since you are already safety trained, experienced and a know it all. I think it’s really something else, they know you aren’t competent so they gave you an easy assignment.
Just like most managers, expect the technicians to be perfect doing multiple jobs and task while you are special and only assigned one, WooHoo! Those who can do, those who can’t become safety managers. Lol!
Can we just say, the safety (harassment) team, no state needs to be mentioned since they are in all of them. Employees wouldn’t feel that way if the safety team did other things besides discipline and look for infractions. Like have safety meetings, educate and raise timely safety issues for different seasons or environments.
Use to have quarterly safety meetings with craft and managers to discuss safety issues and concerns, then find common sense solutions. Thing of the past, so my question would be, how dedicated are they to real safety or is it just a tool to be used for discipline?

Next useless job justifying group that needs to go is the MSOC/Metrics team, they use software and metrics that was designed for a repetitive production environment. It doesn’t fit the many technical positions that have many variables and difficult troubles at AT&T. There needs to be some kind of measurement that is a better fit for the technical positions, with added credit for variable issues. Most employees jobs or tasks aren’t putting Nut A on Bolt B repeatedly or moving and delivering boxes.
They harass management and bargained and use it as a bludgeon or a tool for discipline or to reduce managers bonuses. They continue to shrink the job or step credits and move the carrot every year, it never stops. Creates a lot extra work for the managers too.
Our local safety team only harass technicians on stops and dig around till they find some small infraction, it justifies their job. Their other job is to place blame on the technician involved in any accident, no matter the evidence and discipline. The tech has to file grievance to get their deducted pay and discipline reduced or removed from their record.
So, I say good riddance and Ta Ta!
It's about time, TST has way outlived its usefulness to the company. GOOD RIDDENCE!
