How is your job hunt going?

For those who are 50 and older and were affected in the last round, how's the job hunt going? For me, it's been tough trying to land something new. I'm sending out resumes left and right, but I'm getting nothing in return. Not even for jobs with lower pay or fewer perks. It's disheartening, to say the least.

“That's what we say when we don't think the employee is worth investing in.
I'm so sorry”

You are most obviously one who was “promoted” back when call centers were a thing. A time when it wasn’t what you knew, but who you knew and who you bl*w. A time when your work ethic and results didn’t matter. It was all who you bent over for (and still is).
One of those lazy f*cks promoted while your results showed you weren’t even performing, but you got ahead by who you were messing with. So now you think you’re better than, when the reality is, those employees who don’t kiss your azz could run circles around you… but you call them lazy to make yourself feel better.
I got several certifications and 2 degrees via Verizon- then I left because they had people like you in positions they had no business being in. Your attitude (and others of like mind) is part of the reason Verizon lost a ton of talented employees. It’s the company where the sh*t floats to the top.

It's definitely not over once you turn 40 or 50 or wherever you think ageism kicks in.

I just landed a new professional job 6 months before my 60th birthday. Yes, it took a concerted effort to land that position but you have to work at it. There are definitely opportunities out there if you have the right skills and experience while presenting yourself professionally.

Best with your search.

I go to interviews for CEO jobs and tell them It was my idea to buy AOL and Yahoo.....they hand me a mop and a toilet scrubber and say I can get some janitorial work

I’m sure tons of people have great supervisors who let them use TAP but mine always say they aren’t “Related to company needs” and suggest free webinars.

I always laugh at people who say they didn't acquire any skills at verizon. They offer tuition assistance. If you didn't take any classes or get any certifications that's on you. We're not going to sign you up for you. We can't attend the classes for you.
Maybe there's a reason they want you gone.... sheer, unadulterated laziness.
That's a large part of why I choose the employees to RIF that I do.

I sure hope I don’t get laid off and have to look for a job. I make an outstanding salary but have zero skills. I don’t really want to flip burgers for a living.

@2pny+1ovHMdUe - do you mind tell us what kind of skill you had from Verizon that leads 3 companies in a bidding war of your services ?

I'm 51. After leaving VZ i had 3 companies in a bidding war over me. My new team lead was telling me they avoid millenials. The last two they had would only work from home. And, they each were employed by at least one other company and it was apparent in the quality of their work.

I’ve been looking on and off since I turned 40 and except for a couple offers I didn’t want for far less than I make no responses at all. When I turn 50 in a couple years I’m just gonna go work the gate at the park.

I am over 50 and it is tough finding a job. Companies are not desperate to hire and can take months for them to reply back to you, if they do as most "ghost" you. Plant those seeds and keep applying and sending your resume..you never know. I had luck finding a city/county job that don't look at age but requires you to pass an assessment. Once you pass, you are in pretty much.

I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about.
I'm 55. I left VZ. I chose one company. I made one resume. I had one zoom interview and one in person interview. They made their offer. I countered with a number 33% more than I made at VZ (well into the six figure range). They accepted. They've been impressed since.

Job hunt is tough. Guess I’ll have to keep cashing those unemployment checks.

Its definitely tough out there. I have not been laid off (yet) but I started building my resume 2 months ago in preparation. I have applied for a few jobs already that are at the same salary as mine now but I haven't received a call back for any of them. As bad as it is here I would gladly stay just to have the paycheck.

I applied for a position at Lumen, and they don't ask your age, just when you graduated. So, if you got your degrees prior to 1990, you would never get hired, just the way they weed you out.
