Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Bingo! Additional Medicare RIFs will happen after AEP. The volume of cuts will be determined on enrollment loss/gain.

So December 8th let go date correlates to the end of annual enrollment period which ends December 7th . From 10-1 to 12-7 is where Centene makes most of its money for the year . So they are making sure they are not short staffed to make all there money then bye bye .

The culture of Centene is centered around GREED & INSENSITIVITY...Robbing taxpayers and the underserved population of their last penny...Diversity & Inclusion, and falsely pretending they care about our Medicaid & Medicare members so management can cash out. Also, promising yearly bonus in addition to compensation upon hire. Then 2 months after hire, they announced they are no longer paying the bonus that was included upon hire. Centenes' management is NOT just scamming the Medicaid & Medicare members, but also CMS and their hardworking employees...Go figure!!

Hmmmm....following in MN's footsteps clearly../

"For its part, Centene declined to say much about why it deserved taxpayers’ trust. It won’t describe the conduct it’s paying more than $1 billion to settle and wouldn’t address whether Neidorff’s salary is appropriate, given that the company derives the lion’s share of its revenue from tax dollars intended to help the poorest Americans.

The company did deny that it would resort to improper means to supercharge profits.

“Centene operates according to all relevant local, state and federal regulations and the terms of our contracts in individual states, and any suggestion otherwise is wholly inaccurate,” a company spokesperson said in an email."

SO it's not just Centene messing up with Medicaid like they claim - sad sad sad but this is what you get when you worry about $$$$ instead of people...all those people already being hit with unreasonable deductibles, copays and having to pay for supplemental insurance in alot of cases...what a disgrace

"SGHS started negotiations with the WellCare Plan after years of inappropriate payment of claims and unreasonable denials, the health system said.

“Unfortunately, we have been unable to come to an agreement on our contract provisions with WellCare,” said Scott Raynes, president and CEO of the health system. “While the health system has been honored to care for WellCare Plan members for more than a decade, it cannot continue to provide services without appropriate compensation and reasonable payment practices.”

SGHS will continue to provide care for WellCare Plan members through Dec. 31 and will continue to provide care to patients with certain conditions, such as chronic or complex illnesses, at in-network rates if patients obtain approval from WellCare for continuity of care. Patients must request the approval through WellCare, which will approve or deny the requests on a case-by-case basis."

Another can’t sleep here. 2 more days of not knowing if you will be next. Mind won’t shut off. How can they expect the ones that are being laid off to work until 12/1 or 12/8? I know for myself, if I am one of those I will not be giving it my all like I am now and working greater than 40 hours a week and not getting paid extra to due to being salary. The laid off likely will have a “don’t care” attitude and honestly I don’t blame them one bit. And for the ones that will be left, the greater workload (like it isn’t overwhelming now) and no telling the condition of the cases that will be reassigned to the ones left. Everyone is already stressed to the max.

Completely unrelated to the layoffs, thought I would share this.

There is a nation wide test of the emergency alert system going out on cell phones at 2:20 PM Eastern today. If you have a hidden phone anywhere in your home, please make sure it is completely powered off so as to not give away its location. Stay safe.

The first couple of things that caught my eye is the December 8th date and that 2,000 people are impacted.

I am a BTS employee that came out of PI planning last week. We were in day 2 in PI planning and the leak came out. What was so disgusting is the director and managers went ahead with the planning. For those that do not know, PI planning is for all the projects and activities planned for next quarter (End of of year Q4 2023). We had to endure 2 more days of all day planning. The director had no sense to be empathetic and sensible to wait after this week to commence the rest of PI planning so that we all would have more clarity to plan accordingly for the rest of the year knowing who would be here and who would not. Instead, they just simply assigned us all our sprint cards and went ahead not giving a damn about how they knew we felt. They acted like it was no big deal. The cold silence from management was "off" and very "cold". I survived Day 2 and read alot of BTS employees got laid off today. However, I agree with a previous post. It has been very quiet from management and from our director.... Crickets. Silence. It just is very off and seems like they know something is coming. If not this round, we may be on the chopping block next round As you all know, every one of us were on edge with a lot of anxiety. They have subjected all of us of mental and emotional torture for more than 7 days now. I don't know if there is any legal issues with what they are doing to their employees with the mental trauma to their employees. I can't imagine everyone coming out of this situation with a high morale. Sarah London has a HUGE problem with her employees now. Everyone is going to perform off and not feel comfortable. I read all the comments how this is a business and no one cares about you, you are just a co-worker. Spare me. I get it. However, there has to be something said about what they have done to ALL of us as a "family" and company of individuals that have to take care of ourselves as humans and our respective families.

I am curious as to anyone in BTS that got laid off today. What was your role? I wish you all the best. My heart goes out to you as this is late in the night and I can't sleep. Day 3 approaches. I'm hoping they are done with the BTS lay offs and they move on to the VP's and higher ups that got us into this mess. Hoping there is some opportunity where we company employees can hold Sarah London accountable for what she has done. It all starts with her, her consciousness, her choice to keep this torture going on for 4 days, her decision to carry on with her addressing the issue followed by smiles and jokes. Everyone in the company is going to remember this. If she values who is close to her and around her circle in the company, she better listen up as to how she is now perceived now from her "family" - Centene.

BTS employees who were let go, anyone mind sharing anything about your location or position (product, engineering, etc)? I keep hearing so many rumors, but no one in leadership is saying anything and we’re just having PI planning like nothing’s happening. Nothing at all. But it all feels very “off”. I can’t take another 2 days of this.

Stay strong everyone. None of us deserve to be treated like this.

Mental health- I wish I would let some of the psychopaths drive me to that. If anything people were tired of being dragged by PL (not the good ones). Pinged all day on teams, overworked no growth, etc. Su-ks losing a job and starting over, but it also su-ks being treated inhumane for 8 plus hours a day. Then go home dealing with your own cr-p. On to day 3.. if anyone feeling like that please tell the 100k so we can talk you out of it. So not worth it.

Does anyone know how unemployment works in terms of residing in one state but working in a LOB that's in another state? Up until remote work I only ever worked in the state I resided in. No matter which state unemployment will never cover my rent.

Do you think new employees are at risk also? I’m a few months shy from a one year mark and now more concerned than before.

Absolutely. I’m was just shy of a year. Got the boot. I was shocked that they offered a severance package for <1 year employees.

Make sure you check state law to see if severance payment counts against your unemployment benefits. Below are a few I looked up for convenience:

California - Severance DOES NOT count against unemployment. However, if it is "wages in lieu of notice," it counts as wage-continuation pay and CA EDD subtracts the weekly amount from unemployment.

Oregon - you do NOT have to report severance pay.

Arizona - Severance pay does not disqualify an applicant from unemployment insurance; however, benefit amounts may be reduced during the claim period while severance is received.

Texas - TX law prohibits individuals from qualifying for unemployment benefits while receiving certain types of severance pay. The Texas Workforce Commission decides. You must report it when you apply.

Florida - Severance pay in Florida can definitely impact unemployment benefits. It can directly affect when and/or whether the employee qualifies for unemployment insurance benefits.

New York - You may be eligible to collect benefits if: The weekly amount of dismissal or severance pay is less than or equal to the maximum weekly benefit rate; or. You receive your first dismissal or severance payment more than 30 days after the last day you worked.

Nevada - Receipt of wages in lieu of notice; severance pay; waiver or modification of period of disqualification under certain circumstances.

Louisiana - Any earnings, pensions, accrued vacation, holiday pay, severance or dismissal pay, and wages in lieu of notice must be deducted from the unemployment weekly amount.

Kansas - All severance pay must be reported to the Kansas Department of Labor when filing an application and weekly claims for unemployment benefits. A determination will be made to determine if and when the claimant is eligible for benefits.

Arkansas - You will be ineligible for benefits for the number of weeks of severance you received.

Pennsylvania - Severance pay in an amount greater than 40% of the average annual wage will be attributed to the weeks immediately after the claimant's separation from employment.

New Hampshire - Separation pay (including severance, vacation, holiday, sick, bonus, etc.), is disqualifying in New Hampshire.

Washington - Severance payments do not usually affect your unemployment benefits. However, pay in lieu of notice or continuation pay with full benefits that are guaranteed can affect your benefits. Report any separation-related payment you receive or are entitled to receive to the claims center.

Georgia - You are usually not eligible for unemployment insurance benefits during a period covered by severance pay paid to you by your employer. The only way to know for sure whether severance pay is disqualifying is to file a claim.

Ohio - Severance pay allocated by the employer to a week(s) following the date of separation is deductible from unemployment benefits.

Any states I missed - just Google " state name unemployment severance pay rules".

This is a simple greed move by a company who swallows up other companies and then later realizes they need to focus on their core business by cutting employees.

There will be additional layoffs per Drew Asher via the townhall in November & December. No one that knows who is getting laid off is going to tell you. My advice is to stop asking on this forum. WE DON'T KNOW. That being said - no one is "safe". Your talking about a company that didn't have the ba--s to tell you to your face they were gonna let you go. And don't think for 1 second that come 2024 you will be safe because you won't be. No one will be. I have had some bad employment experiences in my 50yrs but this by far takes the trophy for the worst ever.

My PL said today that layoffs are happening through Thursday and until the entire dept. has been notified, and she gets the all clear, she can't tell us anything. No claim analyst on any team is safe right now from my understanding of what I was told.

I’m so sorry for anyone that has been let go. This is corporate America (and for profit health “care”) at it’s finest.. they do NOT care about your personal life or current health issues while trying to save another billion for their own pockets! Look into jobs with unions for safety, although state/county jobs may pay MUCH less than you are used to at first, give it a few years and you’ll never have to worry about this type of cr-p again
