Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Manager point of view

I want to lay this out because I read a lot of comments here from WF employees and at times I feel that there is some misconceptions about your managers. I have been a manager for a long time with WF. Like most of you, I have also experienced a significant shift in the overall "happiness level" of our company, and not in a good way.

Of course I can't collectlvely speak for all of our managers, and I will note that we have some really awful leadership (especially at the mid and executive level). But as a lower level manager I also share in others concerns about where we are at as a company. I am forced to sit in meetings every single day where my manager and other mid level managers try to pound into our brains that us and our teams that we manage su-k.

Basically we are told that we need to micro manage our teams. Many of my manager peers are disgusted with the direction we are given by our so called "leaders". But guess what, we all have bills to pay too so we go with the status quo not because we want to but because if we don't we are in the unemployment line.

My messaging is simple. If you think your manager is a "company man" or "company woman" and only cares about a promotion and appeasing their managers, you are wrong. Of course there's always going to be handful of those worthless tools, but many of us have same sentiments as many of you do, WF has lost its way and is a sinking ship. Hoping to get offered severance soon. BTW my manager is a corporate owned tool whom I despise. She sold her soul to the devil IMO

We have the most corrupt management at the most corrupt bank in the world. I don't want to be in this shithole anymore. But I am not leaving until I get my severance package. Come on, come on, come and get me!

All the management at Wells Fargo are disgusting. They are all worthless. Look at what is sitting in the bank branches.

I was a manager at WF years ago. When my executive tried to force me to do something unethical, I stood up, protested and did not follow his instruction. Guess what? He retaliated me by trashing my performance review with a bunch of made-up fake accusations. That's when I thought it was not worth staying here and left the company. So think before you open your big mouth.

Has it occurred to you that many commenters here are ex-employees and many of them were not managers. Your statement does not make any sense. Get real!

If you were a manager for a few years and still did not know a damn thing that was going on, you don't deserve to be in that position. You are nothing but a useless deadwood who is getting overpaid. Now get lost!

If you are an IC, your first level manager is generally clueless and powerless. Not by choice. Very possibly your second level too. This is where directives are driven, not decided. Most people should know that and that’s not unique here.

"... a 350 pound frumpy woman with no personality and a limp handshake. Shame on Wells Fargo. This is the face of our company."

At this moment, you are the face of the company, and it isn't pretty.

my low level manager refers to himself/herself in meetings as a leader or leadership. Yet he/she cannot answer simple work-related questions to help us do our jobs.

Nope, not the OP.
Just someone in the same boat as you and in addition has seen, led, and been re-orged a number of times in 2 decades.

Cowardice? OP is explaining the rock and hard place he is at with trying to work in this evironment.

@mcg+1oJVIdeV

Hypocracy? Is he supposed to disagree and not do what he is being held accountable for and be termed out? Just like you would?

@khi+1oJVIdeV

He isnt giving excuses, he is merely explaining the difficulties of working with current leadership.

@ijt+1oJVIdeV

Yes, he reads from a script. As you would do in that position. He has no choice.

Man, some of you can't comprehend. All you do is sp-t some troll response and vote down (like that even means anything).

If the OP is legit, and I think he is, he is posting truths here. I know of it, have seen it with my team, and some of you do too.

Reread, comprehend and add some substance to the conversation instead of your troll rage. Lower management is struggling to work with upper management.

Pretty funny how ICs that are also "just following orders" are casting stones at managers doing the same. If working for WF is akin to being a concentration camp guard, then why are YOU working here?

Also, FHY & FRTO.

OP....Your message falls pretty flat. How many on your team have you had to displace while reading from a script?
.... you do you until your laid off

I just interviewed for a banker position with a 350 pound frumpy woman with no personality and a limp handshake. Shame on Wells Fargo. This is the face of our company. I would never work for such a person with zero people skills

That may be true. But I also was a manager there, and after experiencing their scandals and culture, I had to look in the mirror and decide if I really wanted to be aligned with an organization that puts profits above people and one who has paid billions in fines for mistreating and abusing its customers (sale practices, auto after market products, mortgage, etc). It was a cult. Do I really want to wake up and work at a company that doesn't align with my values? The answer wasn't a no, it was a Fuxk no! I left. It was good for my health. I will forever despise WF.

My WF manager is a monster. They only tell me what they think " I need to know". With that said, I can at least appreciate OP honesty that even those their manager is a typical "robot corporate" manager they have a spine and don't agree with corporate b.s. it's easy for us to say a manager is a "yesman" but many of them are normal peeps like you and I that have families to feed like you and I. Corporate America basically owns ALL of us sadly unless you are lucky enough to be self employed

My team's mgr stinks. She only cares about herself (and maybe a couple favorites). Never tells our team anything worthwhile. Tells each team member different things. Pretends she doesnt know anything about general hub strategy (seriously). She's totally checked out and already has her own exit strategy in place. Selfish from start to finish.

I have a great manager who speaks very openly about the good and bad at WF. Her manager is also solid. From there, it’s all downhill. But we are a fairly small team and she’s great at helping us know “what’s watched”, and giving us the tools and support to succeed.

Yes to the micromanaging….. it’s disgusting we are all adults…. Let us act like one.
(Sure there are exceptions)

Then you get stuck not knowing what to do. Should you wait to see if you are in the next layoff or quit.

Here’s the thing. If a manager is truly of the decent type you describe about yourself, employees know it and appreciate them. I’ll say, however, that type of manager has been far and few for many of us over the past few years.

Also a manager can let his/her employees “know” who they really are and what they really feel on a human level without sacrificing their manager position or what’s required of them by WF. This isn’t the CIA.

Everybody around here is a yes man / yes woman these days. The statement "I was only following orders" has been used to justify too many tragedies in history. But everybody around here blindly follows orders. This is a company of devil.

I have no problem at all with my direct manager. I believe he’s doing his best for our team and also stuck in a miserable position. I’d be very angry if we lost him, even.

All of my direct managers for over a decade have been pretty awesome. Not heard one teammate talking any sh*t.

There are a lot of folks stuck reporting to jerks who want to share their pain and that’s fair. If it doesn’t apply to you, it’s not about you. Keep doing what you do.
