Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Why is the banking industry so plagued with di-kheads?

The banking industry is chock full of a-holes. I've worked in it almost 20 years, every pr--k I've met works in a bank. What is it about this industry that makes it so?

It’s the lack of racial diversity at the most senior levels of management that has been the primary contributor.

Banking attracts people that don't really know what they want to do but want to make a decent living. Hence, you don't get lawyers, creatives, therapists, etc in banking. Maybe those people are really frustrated as they don't really have a purpose except making money & scr--wing people over to get it, so they get twisted. They have no real talent in anything except sounding credible in meetings & persuading the higher ups. It's all BS. It's also a game.

It’s money. Money changes everything.

Why? Cause there is no real product. Nothing the customer can tangibly feel/use/see. Now you can make banking a "service" -- like Visa, Mastercard. Or make the pain of doing something less (like Rocket Mortgage). Once the focus is on something outside of the customer (product/service) the toxic managers take over.

It’s not exclusive to the financial industry, the world is overrun with them.

It's due to the full nature of the financial industry:

  • The purpose it serves to humanity (money is a necessary evil, not a necessary charity)
  • The direct and indirect pressures that non-banking industries and criminal activity push on banks
  • Money is power and power is money. It is the most addictive dr-g when you get a taste of it (most likely if you are here on this site you experience the feeling through TV and movie plots)

There is a constant push-pull action going on in finance and such as in life, the negative always seems louder and stronger than the positive.

No sense in dwelling in it, better to stick to your convictions than be brought down.

Almost all of this company's scandals, fines, regulatory drama etc. has come from those super high performing revenue-generating types. So, yeah.

For non-revenue generating roles (IT, Risk, etc.) it's because there are no real skills required and if you can bullsh-t, you can last a long time.. All of these places are the same. Talk to anyone that's worked in IT, Risk or other non-revenue generating role at BofA, Citi, etc. They all su-k.

For revenue generating roles, you either perform or you don't and bullsh-tters do not last long.

Because banking requires no real skills. Hence we attract highly talented sc-mbags. The higher proficiency sc-mbags end up at the top. Banks will make money in their sleep so competence or lack thereof is not a differentiator

Greed and selfishness beget corruption.

Banking roles from top to bottom weren't always this ridiculously high.

How many of us went into banking for the money?

There's a reason there's considerably less corruption in teaching.
