Thread regarding CVS layoffs

How did they choose who to let go ?

People are reporting many cuts were high performers. Does anyone know how it was decided who was terminated?

Manager here- every department used their own criteria. Pay, job performance, importance of work they supported and mixture of all of the above. I had to come up with a name in literally five minutes. My boss said simply who could you live without? And thats how I chose.

Doesn’t seem to be much rationality. If somebody is in a high pay grade but gets a lot of work done, seems like it would make more sense to keep them than the 2-3 people who need help on everything.

Not that it’s bad to need help, we all start some where, just doesn’t make sense to keep them over the ones always getting stuff done.

Direct managers were not asked any such list. Unless they got tricked into giving a feedback without knowing the true purpose of the list

Two people I know who are fantastic were let go. One worked on a "low value" product, the other was in a high pay grade but had short tenure with the company. Seems like a lot of ruthless calculations - if you are expensive to keep and cheap to lay off, high risk of being laid off. If you're assigned projects that aren't planning out, you could be let go.

Good leaders let go. Leaders with questionable ethical values, conflict of interests, who run their own consulting organizations and place their employees in CVS through approved vendors are still there and have been elevated to higher positions.

SVPs and up put all our names in a hat then started pulling names out in turns. If they knew the person personally they ignored it and drew another name. Then they all laughed after each round, took shots and ate rich people food before going another round.

Personally I know 20 people who were laid off. They were white, brown, black, male, females. A lot of them were brown. Just because you have myopic view, don’t generalize and start giving clues.

Direct managers provided suggestions months ago. That’s what we were told by our direct leader he had to provide a certain number of suggestions. He also was let go. They have had the names in our organization for months according to him

Personally I know of only 6 people that were laid off. All 6 are white. That should give you a clue.

Just speculation but..

Probably a little bit in every area at all levels and all ages to avoid discrimination suits.

Followed by you are eligible for severance if you sign a waiver giving up your right to file a lawsuit

They are not sharing the criteria. Many high performers let go as you said.
