Are we safe from layoffs if we live in or near a hub city and have an accommodation to work remotely? Don’t want to go into the office!

The remote workers in hub cities get to stay comfortably working from home while the employees dutifully going into non-hub office locations as required must be laid off. Make sense?
Say what you will but there are a lot of remote non-hub employees and managers who are still here doing not much of anything, hoping to hide forever
Remote isn’t going away. There will always be at least some remote workers.
Doesn’t mean your job and department won’t be eliminated or greatly reduced. Automation is going to change a lot by summer 2024.
No one is safe unless you're an exec in Hudson Yards. Also, FHY.
Remote work will be back, just have to get the worthless pieces of sh-t out at CEO and CAO and we can actually get on the road to efficiency.
for the OP:
- no location makes you "safe". Not even if you're going into a "hub" 5 days a week.
- you can get laid off while on FMLA leave, accomodation-based remote work, anything.
- accommodations for remote work with a location nearby are temporary. they must be periodically renewed. they have been getting tighter/more restrictive on what is passable for remote work accommodation
Some groups are displacing based on location (non hub) and/or remote status. You'll start to see more and more of those as the year goes on...
They are laying off those with remote exceptions. I was in the first wave as were MANY colleagues. There will be other waves of this before year end. Wells is effectively ending remote work at the company.
I live close enough that I could come in if I had to (85 miles), but I was not offered the option. Met with my manager from 8-8:15am, he told me my access would be cut off at 11am. It was gone by 9.
Absolutely NO ONE is getting put on a PIP for 30 days and then being fired. If you're on a PIP it has to be for at least a full performance cycle, with a LOT of documentation before, during and after. It is HARD to actually get FIRED from Wells for performance issues. As a former manager, I've had to do this a couple times.
NOTE: Fired has no benefits. A layoff has benefits based on length of service. If you're getting a notice period and severance, you have NOT been fired. Period.
No, you are not safe, I was laid off while in a workplace accommodation
They don’t lay them off. They put you on a PIP and fire you in 30 days. I’m aware of it first hand.
People have anxiety though
Sounds like you don't need the accommodation. Sounds like you have a choice
Not for long
Wells is laying off people of all kinds, even pregnant women on maternity leave. So no one is safe.
Way too many people seem to get remote exceptions
I would think your safer than someone remote not by an office, but be prepared to get your remote exception pulled (maybe as early as next year) and be required to go into an office like everyone else. At least you have that option.
Probably not, as I know of one person just got let go in Charlotte but he was remote.
