Yeah, you may be 'saving their jobs' but it's some of those BS 2+years of severance offers that rob the piggy bank. There is not enough money to sustain pork deals like that for long. But hey, you got yours, right?

All depends on your situation. If you’re union and close to retirement you probably do not want to go into management. I was union for 4 years and then moved to management. Been with the company 13 years now and I definitely ended up better off being in management this long. That said yes the union has a better severance deal than management unles you can make it to 4th management position.

20 plus years as craft. I was told by someone who I respected not to take a "management" position. This turned out to be sage advise. I'll keep my pension and my 401K contributions. I'll keep my health care benefits in retirement. I will not have to RTO, but that is OK, I never stopped going into work to begin with.

Three managers that I know both professionally and personally have recently been laid off. All three were outstanding employees in every role they've had. They got a minimal severance package. They now each say they would have been much better off if they didn't accept that manager job and remained occupational and union. It looks like my manager position will soon be eliminated as well and I wish I were still union. Live and learn. I can see how non-union employees can have so many reasons to talk negative about unions but the bottom line is that when your time comes when you will be laid off, you would be better off under a union contract than not being under a union contract.
Don’t spend it until you get it. I doubt seriously we’ll see many non management surplus offers. The plan is to let attrition take care of the union folks and wait out those who are RIP and just waiting on an offer.
The CWA/Leg T contract has termination plan language which calls for 104 weeks pay for those workers with over 31 years service. Every quarter there are some surplus positions announced. Many workers ready to retire hope it is their time to get the VTP as it is called - to sweeten the pot in retirement. Two years pay is indeed sweet.

Just because it is not available to you and you don't like that, doesn't make it is less true. The various Union contracts offer 1 to 2 years pay to take a VSP (Voluntary Severance Package). The contract also offers a package for those who are surplussed, ISP (Involuntary Severance Package). I witnessed a frame attendant years ago with 35 years get an ISP and got 1.5 years salary to leave. I think she is still smiling.
It isn't 5-5-5, but it is a win, win, win.

Many managers asked and begged for a management job because they are afraid of physical and technical hands on work. If they could of stomached a craft job long enough for retirement they would have. Don’t kid yourselves. Go RTO yourself.

I also regret taking a bs manager job. Every other manager I know privately says the same thing: that they wish they were still in the union.

I stupidly accepted a low level management job as a promotion for what ended up being LESS $$ per hour and now it looks like my group (of "managers") will soon be laid off with the basic small severance package. What I thought was a promotion was really stupid of me to accept. I wish I were getting the two year pay termination package like I'd get if I were still a CWA member with Leg T. Congrats to the OP.
