Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Chaos: Intentional or Incompetence?

I know people who work in completely different parts of the bank. 1 common theme coming from all directions is chaos. From all levels of management, workflows, and communication (or lack thereof). So is the chaos on purpose or are executives that incompetent to know how to lead a company, or potentially a combination of both.

The conspiracy theorist in me says the chaos is intentional. Maybe for a couple different reasons:

  • Trying to get people to quit so they don't have to payout packages for laying people off. Then replace with cheap labor elsewhere.
  • Trying to tank the company/stock price. Get it low enough so parts of the bank (or as a whole) can then be sold at a discounted rate to Citi/BoA/JPMorgan/etc... All exectutives and Directors are from these other entities anyway, seems logical they were planted in WF to "bring 'r down".

If the reason is incompetence, then Lord help us all.

Bulldoze a house day 1, start measuring your progress day 2, congratulate yourself and your buddies about your EXCITING progress day 30. Never talk about the fact that the house had to be built from the ground up because you destroyed it. They used this formula to destroy service, created breaks in continuity with re-org after re-org, and stripped authority from anyone who cared. I have my doubts that they actually know how to rebuild or will stick around until the rebuild is done.

100% agree this is intentional. God only knows what the true purpose is and I feel it is far more nefarious than any of us can imagine.
Feels like this is part and parcel for all the America destroying things going on the last few years. Yes, I wear a tinfoil hat...

Ignorance. I believe they are deploying the playbook from their former “firm” and paying consultants to think for them. The plan is to jump before the duct tape completely comes off.

Their intentions are incompetent. So yeah, both.

I agree with OP. They are intentionally trying to sc--w us with a series of conflicting directions. Every time something goes wrong, managers will quickly throw their staff members under the bus. This is the old fashioned strategy of a typical corrupt organization.

Hanlon's razor - Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

But probably a little of both.

Solid post. Believe much of the chaos is in high gear to try and force attrition, but it’s hard not to feel like they also want to force a break up given the volume of irrational decisions being made (which could certainly be blamed 100% on incompetence ). One thing is for certain, employees don’t feel confident about the company’s prospects right now, regardless of job stability/layoffs.

By any conceivable measure, it’s a very poorly run company. I don’t know how anyone, from Charlie down to some poor dude in a call center in India, could say different.

In my area, we have filled org gaps with unqualified folks. And that's if we're allowed to backfill. In most cases not.... leaving people over committed and management is too afraid to push back.

I seriously doubt the crop of leadership is competent enough to engineer bringing the company down.

It's a combo of new leadership that doesn't understand the business and driven to produce but kept at bay by sheer inertia. It's a huge company with complex processes, products, regulations, years of built up sh*t driven by "run it like you own it". Practically doing anything, even simple things, takes way too long, costs too much and has too many clueless people involved.

Incompetence, arrogance, greed, entitlement, ignorance, dysfunction, narcissism, inconsistency, unethical, callousness, negligence, operating with a lack of trust and transparency, short-term thinking…

Welcome to the shitshow. Good people are going or have gone. The 'B and C' string is running the bank. Add the India factor and you are fuuuucked.
