Most architects are gatekeeping, riddle-speaking dead weight who, despite being a "thing" for 20+ years still spend more time squabbling about the semantics of what the discipline of Enterprise Architecture actually is instead of providing a sliver of value.
Architect, from the Old English heahcræftiga, "high crafter", or more succinctly "can't code".
Principal Engineers interface between architects, engineering teams and director level management.
Architecture usually sets the strategy, the Principal Engineers are involved in the technical aspects of proof of concepts, requests for proposals and product selection.
The engineering teams implement the products selected by the principal engineers that senior management has approved for purchase or development.
At least that is what the principal engineers I work with do.
