I have this one toxic coworker who kisses management bu-t and takes away work from other people. What would you do? Everyone hates him because he leaves us with no work but managers love him

I had a coworker who did nothing on my projects, but then at review time claimed he was a "co-lead", he would ask to work with me on his projects & then claim he couldn't do the work so I ended up doing it. Then, he gave me ZERO recognition & back stabbed me & threw me under the bus at meetings. He was typical for around here- smooth talker but absolutely useless. I told him I was posting out & he quickly started to post out too as he knew that a) his scapegoat was leaving, b) the person that did a lot of his work was leaving. You need to figure out if your Toxic Coworker is a barnacle that won't go anywhere or a hopper that jumps every year or so before people catch on.
Ask him up front why his throat is so bruised, in front of the leadership he serves, I mean, assists.

If this was real you’d get your work by bringing this up to your manager in your 1x1. Otherwise you can kick back and ride the train or manufacture your own work.

How does a person “take” work from another employee without their cooperation?
Worked with many h1b visa workers like that, because they say they are the only ones highly skilled, and that American education system fails everyone else.
There is only about 1 person's workload for the entire team of 4 people.
A few years after I was laid off, thank you failed American education system, I never learned how to enter data into Excel. Excel tasks are exceedingly impossible for American to do, we need h1b visa, and we need them now.
How did we reach the point that a person who overperforms is "toxic"? OP needs to grow up.
If this is or will affect your performance or potential career profession, you need to protect yourself as much as that’s possible at WF. Unfortunately, stack ranking at WF has bred a whole new level of cut throat employees.
Document for your records AND to your manager every time you ask to take on a task. Proactively ask your manager proactively to take on specific tasks. Link it to your role specifically or your strengths. Question publicly (staff meetings) if you can do ABC task as initiatives or new things are shared by your manager.
Look out for yourself because there is absolutely no one else who will do it for you.

The thing is; we want to work. But this person takes all the work from us.
Regardless of it's benefit or lack there of, there's nothing "toxic" about a person working hard and taking on extra tasks. Worry about yourself OP.
Who cares. Let him do all the work. Leaves you more time to do what you want to do which is nothing
There is enablement from management and that is the problem. The focus should be on the overall system (tech or otherwise) and how the work is managed within.
If anything, know this guy will never acheive much by working so hard at WF. Fool's errand!

So if a person is working their bu-t off, that makes them toxic? Sounds like he's just outperforming you all. Maybe take some notes and try to take work back from him. Sounds like he's just an overachiever.
It sounds corny, but give him enough rope and he’ll hang himself.
I’ve been through it twice in my career. It is difficult, but keep working hard, don’t lower yourself to their level, and wait them out. People like that always blow themselves up.
