Yes, they are two separate companies. If you took a job at Directv today you would be a new hire and your time at AT& T would not be acknowledged.

Once there was a ripe fruit called DTV which was swallowed up by AT&T. T’s corrosive acids broke DTV apart and eventually what was left was expelled through T’s rear end. But despite T’s best wiping efforts a piece of chewed up and smelly DTV is stuck on T’s a-s-s
AT&T owns a 70% share but the company is managed by TPG (for the better).
And AT&T still dictates their technology decisions and still dictates their staffing levels

Pre merger DTV employees used to also get free DTV Premier for free at up to 2 houses, up to 10 TVs per house, including free NFL Sunday Ticket.
Some partners (like Apple) actually get better deals on wireless discounts than AT&T employees too.
