Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

A warning regarding being asked to cross-train a lower-wage associate

Management is actively replacing higher-paid experienced employees with lower-waged employees. It’s an active plan and it’s happening across all divisions of the bank. (Not new, I know, but the pace has picked up and I’m watching it happen.)

Charlie is pressuring managers and directors to reduce their costs in any way possible. Managers have been sent strict parameters for their departments to meet as far as costs and head-count.

Cross -training is a normal and positive process in a business which is growing. And a business with trustworthy leaders. But now that Charlie has we-ponized it, I would proceed with caution.

My thought would be to request a face-to-face with your manager and look them in the eye and ask questions. “I am aware of other senior employees who have been laid off after training an associate. Should I be concerned that’s what’s happening here?” “Is our department properly staffed, or should we expect layoffs in the future?” “You are asking me to train another person on a position which I have grown and perfected personally, how can we know that upstairs is being straightforward with us? “ Keep asking the questions and then make any decisions you need to make based on your gut instinct after the meeting.

I don’t necessarily mean to suggest that you can’t trust your manager, but just know that they are being forced to save their jobs too. It has become dog eat dog, unfortunately, and you have to be smarter than they are.

A person on our team was just boasting how several people “asked me to mentor them” … and all I could think is how clueless she is. She is obnoxious, has been lowered by title a few years ago and makes BS up as she goes along. Not mentor material. Funny that her ego has blinded her vision of the truth.

@1sik+1nD3reZB Hudson yards is overpaid and expensive. FFS. It is one of if not the most expensive places for salaries and real estate.

We could save a ton of money if we’d stop doing so much stupid sh@t or have so many absurd processes that take forever or having to do them multiple times over. We are ridiculously inefficient for even simple things.

OP here - According to some of the comments here, it sounds like a few of you think I’m referring to Offshoring. That is happening, of course, but I’m talking about in your own department/LOB. Your manager asks you to train someone you might even be friends with - you take pride in sharing your knowledge and expertise with them - and then you get handed your walking papers and your friend/associate moves in to your role. All very underhanded, dishonest and nauseating.

If you have been here for a period of time and have built up a higher salary than most- they are aggressively gunning for you no matter what value you bring to the table. C-Suite aiming for mediocrity at best if it saves money.

Charlie has lowered the bar for acceptable behavior and erased common decency.

Agree. It is more culture and cannot be trained.I’m surprised they haven’t learned this yet. We have been sending them work for at least 2 decades now if not 3 and the work hasn’t improved any.

ha, jokes on you. Hudson Yards believes ALL American workers are overpaid. You're on the chopping block just like gramps, the only difference is he might have a claim of age discrimination. You're entirely expendable with no risk. Hyderabad and Hudson Yards are the only hubs.

Life insurance is sold as being income replacement, but let's face it. It's also very much about making survivors feel better. Enough money, and grieving melts away.

Even to our closest loved ones, our lives have a dollar value of sorts.

Your best bet is to outlive everyone you know. You might even make some coin.

The Manager will lie to you "it's staff augmentation," etc. I am sure they have been given talking scripts with Q&A. Just like the RTO justifications.

@adm+1nD3reZB What management doesn't realize is that US "can do" attitude, education, verbal skills & logic can't be replicated in these overseas locations.

Refresher training a bunch of stooges in Manila on Tuesday with a deck that they’ve had for over a year that I’ve trained them on previously. I pray to god it’s the last time. Managements schizophrenic merry go round of giving the same training to the same people over and over is getting old. They should be able to conduct the training at this point (I’m literally the only person in my group NOT in Manila). Please be the end. Give me my divorce settlement FFS.🤦🏻‍♂️

Yeah, CCAR is doing this. Sad that all that confidential info is going overseas. Once you write up job aids, be prepared for your "productivity %" to drop (even if it really doesn't) which justifies a layoff. Of course, if you are a favorite that just giggles during meetings without brining anything to the table, you're safe :) They get the strong performers to do the grunt work & then eject them. They keep the gigglers, brown losers & back stabbers.

I see it happening now more compared to prior COVID. I see it strategy to get rid of aging team members. But I decide milk this puppy and upset them as much I can in their illegal strategy. U can go labor department and file complaints. No help there. But Two parties running this nation doesn’t care abt us in bottom chain. Bunch of managers discussing in front of me how to replace me in a open meeting. I told them I am alive and not walking away to make ur life easy. Aging friends don’t give up. Do ur job for pay u get and ignore these Charlie su-kers

I don't even get the chance to train, because that someone will get hired on a team that I have already proven to be a great candidate for and developed excellent rapport/relationships with. Nothing gets more insulting then also having to guide that someone in the job they acquired that you could do in your sleep.

There is something ridiculous about WF that holds people back. It is frustrating. Their hiring track record has been so poor for so long, WF prefers to wallow in the misery of their existence over and over again until some external forces (lawsuits, gov't fines, etc) write their path for them.

This is no better than a lab rat running through the same maze over and over, relying solely on electric shocks to signal wrong turns.

Is WF not better than a lab rat? Collectively can't they think ahead and avoid succumbing to being the overly tired and stereotypical big bad evil bank?

Can't imagine why anyone would want to replace some paranoid, overpaid boomer trying to throw a wrench in any internal mobility

I suggest not even having the conversation with your manager and proceed as if WF is trying to replace you. Chances are, that's exactly what is going on. Why bother putting your manager in that position unless you are ready for them to lie. Instead, ask yourself if you have knowledge of something that will be very difficult for another person to figure out in your absence, and hold that very close to your chest.
