Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Remote technology workers - targeted for layoffs

I have no direct relationship with my manager (zero contact, which is another problem we can talk about at WF) and was surprisingly given information ahead of time, that remote workers are likely target for upcoming rounds of layoffs. Couldn't get an exact date unfortunately, the layoff pattern as others have posted here seems to be on Tuesdays, both early and late in month. Figuring my time is up 5/9 or 5/16.

Also confirmed this with two other managers who I work more closely with, teams are being more intently queried to find opportunities to reduce overhead.

There are a lot of roles in tech and maybe some are specialized enough that their jobs are in good standing. Mine is not specialized and seeing the fog lift finally.

@zku

Our department in tech is as such:

  • 3 days/week required (we are non-software delivery).
  • must meet that average over four week period, reviewed and calculated every four weeks via Tableau
  • first offense = informal warning
  • second offense = formal written warning/PIP
  • third offense = potential termination + manager will get warning

Good luck everyone!

I’d be overjoyed to be terminated, but my team is down to a skeleton crew and they “can’t afford” to lose me

Outsourcing to India is a 20 year old idea. All those companies e.g. Target have no more off shore development. WF is brain dead and way late to the party on this. Time is invested on putting PoCs on teamsquirts instead of accomplishing actual.

The whole point of the information age is that data can go outside the room. "Location strategy" is ridiculously outdated. We need to stop throwing billions of dollars away on buildings. Do we need a few? Sure, but not zillions of them for admin workers.

Pre-Covid WF was moving to data proximity. Had an employee who moved to Durango, Colorado - he was literally weeks from being laid off. I watched really good employees leave as they were not close to regional hubs that had been identified.

Putting it in a different category of "fail" doesn't fix the problem, if anything it makes it impossible to fix because you've artificially detached the root cause from the result. Keep thinking that coffee and pickleball will fix this.

@1ycd+1mqr0OHW Ahh you see that’s not an RTO fail. That is an employee morale fail and it is not lost on me. I make no claims that RTO is a good thing or that I want it. Circumstances have changed for me so I’m playing the game while working my exit but using my own rules until the loopholes are closed. Ideally my exit will come before then

@tzj+1mqr0OHW You will have your own fun ride in the near future. No one has to ask you to come in. It has already been defined as 1, 3 or 3+ days in depending on positional alignment or 0 if your worksite is listed as Remote. Since you failed to define your location assignment or what “near a hub” actually means then your group is either listed as remote, has an exception currently or you have a brain dead manager who is setting you all up. If you really are in Tech the RTO requirements ave been defined regardless of your manager spoon feeding it to you directly and that step is not a requirement prior to being laid off as the mass communications are already on file. Unless you are listed as REMOTE you need to be doing some CYA and ask your manager specifically why you are excluded from the requirement. This is not a situation where it is better to keep quiet vs asking a question thinking you are outing yourself.

WF doesn't need as reason to let you go, get with it! I was laid off 5 weeks ago in tech and I was a top performer. I mean I was blind-sided, same with my manager cause now the slack was going to be pushed on a few of my peers.. Why, because the job I did in tech was highly needed and I was busy as he-l.. So, there are no targets, per say. Everyone is fair game, and if they want x amount of people gone in your LOB, they do not need any excuse.

RTO will fail because they think the only form of resistance is not going in. Far from it. They should be much more concerned about people that don't give them an easy out to term them, but are perma pi---d off about know-nothing A holes destroying this company. The only thing the OC is hammering is their own junk by tanking morale. The cute little report will look just peachy, and the company will perform like absolute garbage. Literally the only thing that can make a company successful is employees giving an S. Take that away and it's a matter of time.

Mgmt is serious about RTO. I'm 1000% against, but gonna play the game.
Get the badge swipe.
I do believe my mgr has secret agreements with a couple of team mates--pays parking for one and allows WFH for our contractor. I have a feeling the "one" will snitch if I don't spend 5+ hours in office--not fair at all but I either comply or get fired!!

It is a harsh way to herd people like cattle on a call, hear a script read and then have your access cut in an hour. I worked for the company for 25 plus years and no one gave a da&m Instead of going out with a retirement party I got axed with a pink slip.

In tech, fully remote, my team is still hiring. Everyone is near a hub, yet no one is being asked to go into the office.

I thought when I got cut that the package would be enough to not have me get upset and angry. I did get cut and got a package, but it seems so empty after having been discarded with barely a 'thanks' after so many years caring about my work.

@lhc+1mqr0OHW You're mostly correct. Everything that's been passed down to groups in Tech that I know is that this is tracked via 13 week roller. Teamworks/TECHNOLOGY - right hand side under WELLS FARGO TECHNOLOGY - scroll down to TECHNOLOGY WORKPLACE CO-LOCATION STRATEGY UPDATE 04/25/2023. Plenty of reading and links in there. One link should take you to an SN KB detailing all the RTO/WFH compliance rules.

For anti-RTO'ers, feel free to fight that fight, talk to a labor lawyer if you're let go for not adhering. Worker protection laws differ by state but after actually speaking to one myself for verification there is no upside in my state without a specific contract when hired on. Can't get severance, unemployment insurance, litigate when you're let go for cause.

Thanks for posting your account OP, it is appreciated. That said, I firmly believe that CS is targeting EVERYONE. It's just a matter of time. They want AI doing all the domestic work, and a few people in India and that's about it. Oh, and some execs collecting checks in Hudson Yards. Gotta have those.

Management is trying to get lower and middle management to fight their workers right as a unionization effort is catching wings.

Brilliant move, Chuck.

I’m in tech and we were just told the expectations have been set and tracking is now live as of 5/1. Short term exceptions (30 day or less) will be tracked and documented by your manager. Exceptions longer than 30 days requires OC+1 approval. Averages will be monthly, if you do not meet the monthly average it will be addressed by your manager. If continue to miss mark, consequence model will be initiated and your manager may also receive disciplinary action. 🤣🤣

I call BS on this post. I was remote well before the craziness and things would fall apart if cut. Of course, I would welcome a package.

While I believe this is inevitable the post is too vague to be believed that it will be that soon. With the heavy push seems like they will bang on 0 day RTO'ers first who are blatantly not adhering to mandate, back fill, then cull the Remotes.
