Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This is more than RTO: What we really know

There's a lot of confusion and misinformation going around. Stankey rolled out this policy in such a chaotic manner that everything is being passed down in random leadership calls and meetings. This is more than just return to office. This is a massive layoff affecting thousands of people.

Here's what we know for sure:

  1. If you are non-management, this doesn't apply to you
  2. If you're outside the US, this doesn't apply to you
  3. If you are in a customer-facing or operations role that requires you to be in a specific location, this doesn't apply to you - so store managers, field managers, data center operations, etc. According to the Stankey email on 5/16 this is 60% of all managers who are out of scope.
  4. There are 9 core locations for the remaining 40% of managers - they are Dallas (including Plano), Atlanta (including Alpharetta), Los Angeles, San Ramon, Seattle, St. Louis, Middletown, Bedminster, and Washington D.C. This is all from the Stankey email.
  5. If you are in one of those 9 locations you will be designated as "Office" or "Virtual" sometime in June.
  6. "Office" designated people will need to be in the office 3-5 days per week, measured as 60%+ of non-vacation and non-holiday time per month in their assigned office.
  7. The 3-5 days rule for Office people applies starting 7/10 for Dallas and Atlanta and 9/5 for the other 7 core locations.
  8. "Virtual" designation will apply to less than 10% of people and they still need to be in their assigned core office 1-5 days per month. There is no zero days per month option.
  9. People outside the 9 core locations (15% of all managers according to the Stankey email) are going to get officially notified in June that they have to relocate by 12/31/2023 or they are fired. This is thousands of people who are going to be fired by EOY.

Within the Jeremy Legg (ATS) org, which has about 12K management employees today:

  1. 2,000 management employees (17% of the org) are outside the 9 cities and will be gone by December 2023.
  2. St. Louis, San Ramon, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. are going to cease being core locations, and all managers in those locations (who aren't customer facing or operations) must relocate or be fired in the next 18-24 months. That's Dec 2024 to Jun 2025. This affects 1,200 more management employees (10% of the org).
  3. This means that 27% of all ATS employees will be gone in the next 2 years.
  4. Managers in any of the other locations could be told to relocate between other cities or be fired within the next 24-36 months. That's by Jun 2026. This will depend on the org within Legg, but for example some orgs are already planning on forcing everyone in Seattle to move to Dallas or even forced moves between Atlanta and Dallas depending on the team. This will lose an unknown number of people but at least hundreds more.
  5. These are software engineers and application support teams being impacted, so with 27%+ being fired many platforms and applications will fail and cause unknown impacts to AT&T being able to function as a company.

For all of these relocations, there will be no relocation package offered, it is move at your own expense. And you will be told where to relocate to, you don't get to pick the city.

There may be exceptions to the relocation requirement but I've heard that will apply to less than 1% of people unless you have a documented medical accommodation.

Other orgs besides Legg have similar impacts with the goal of eventually consolidating to just Dallas and Atlanta by 2026 but I haven't seen those communications to document them for sure.

I’m just curious if outside legal has looked
Into ATT LOOPHOLES. Think about who is the most affected to move Across the country to keep their job? The older person with mortgage, kids in school, older parents, spouse with a job. Last I looked there were 10,500 people who said no to moving. A lawyer should subpoena ATT to ask the ages of and how close to the rule of 75 to get full retirement benefits.

I guarantee there’s circumstantial age discrimination here. I would also like to get my hands on some emails from the highest company leaders for some direct evidence. Guaranteed age plays a HIGE factor on who is chosen and when. More money saved, the more these fu--s line their personal pockets.

Criminal behavior!

I seriously hope everyone milks it as long as possible, waits til the last minutes, makes them terminate you so you can fight for severance, then just bounce to a new job.
Seriously, sc--w these people

“I don't doubt this, but is this speculation or fact (and proof of fact)?
This is fact. Here is the proof. These are from a deck that's been going around and shows the locations and timeline for the Legg/ATS org.

https://postimg.cc/k2SxXfjP

I’ve seen these as well, how are they going to ensure people move?
A lot will just be like ‘ah shucks sure I’ll move’ then take the time to milk the salary, slack, and find another job (I don’t blame them, fu-k’em)

This is so poorly thought out, what a bunch of fu----g mo--ns…I really hope projects start failing and sh-t starts falling apart.

The first FAQs in the initial description obliquely refers to the fact employees may get severance under the AT&T policy. The official severance policy, as revised January of 2023, states severance is given if an employee is required to move to keep one’s job and level and no comparable position (at or above the existing level) is offered in the location from which one is being removed. Assuming the end of year date is accurate, then severance will be paid in early 2024 to all who aren’t moving.

Someone said: "Seems poorly thought out, losing a lot of domain experts…"

Every major decision AT&T executives have made in the last 10 or 15 years have been poorly thought out. The attempted T-Mobile acquisition, the DTV acquisition, the Time Warner acquisition, Zander, you name it. All poorly planned and poorly executed debacles. This one takes the cake however. I wonder how Wall Street will react.

I’m out of STL but it looks like me and all the TDP here are screwed as well since STL isn’t covered under the ATS umbrella.

Seems poorly thought out, losing a lot of domain experts…

Guess I’ll need to brush up the resumè

Coincidence that the team in India is currently staffing up? Not likely. Don’t worry about application support, they got it covered.

OP thanks for posting the comprehensive facts. For the ones that write “I got over 20 years at T, but I'm now on countdown to termination. I'm hoping for 6 month severance, but I have no idea about that.” Hello! Look at a calendar. Your six month severance pay just started. You will be paid to the end of the year. Wish granted. (You’re not actually going to do any work after they told you you’re being fired, right?) Spend your time searching for a new job. Good luck to everyone, we’re all going to need it.

I'm in the impacted group and i'm gonna be fired on 12/31 it appears almost certain. Closest of 9 sites to me is 350 miles away, and I will not relocate. I have no medical situation or disability. I got over 20 years at T, but I'm now on countdown to termination. I'm hoping for 6 month severance, but I have no idea about that. Just remember, life goes on. The universal law of life is one word: survive. This too shall pass. Just like a kidney stone.

So stupid in my small group we have 12 and I think only 5 of us work near a collab zone. And that’s not to say we all have to report to Texas which would eliminate our whole team and L3

No fu----g way I would relocate my family across country just to continue working for this shithole of a company run by a real piece of sh-t like Stankey.
Who is to say if you relocate your family to keep your job, to some location you have no control over, you must relocate there, settle in, get the kids settled in school, you won't get di-ked around again by the head sc-mbag in charge?
Fu-k this piece of sh-t company.

Try to remember this isn’t personal. It’s all needs of the business. The warning signs this was coming have been clear for a long time! Just ask the retirees who left at the end of 2021 who essentially felt they were terminated to retain medical coverage.

Aligns with what I’ve heard. In the end the overall goal is to reduce management employee count by 25%. And they believe this new approach will get them close…then a surplus if needed to get to remaining 25%. So what that infers is more than likely some folks that move will be surplussed later.

Does anyone believe for a minute that Jeremy could ever be honest with you? His allegiance is with Stankey. He has little reason to level with anyone else.
See ya in Dallas Jeremy!

This tracks with everything I've heard except Legg is 35% of people fired not 27% so even worse. The number is on the ATS site from his email.

“ Whoever posted this, thank you! You are 100% on point. Now just cut and paste it and send it to all l2-l5 supervisors in Legg org so they can communicate it to their teams. There is so much confusion at every level.”

This was communicated on Friday during a Legg open mic. Everyone in this org alread knows.

If the managers or teams supporting these platforms and applications don’t currently have backup processes or solid documentation in place, this team needs to be replaced since continuity was always at risk.

There are continuity plans for applications but not plans for losing all employees in a given location at once. Since some teams are already colocated in one of the impacted cities there are some app teams that are going to lose 70-80% of all their people in the next 6 months.

We really known very little to nothing until we get the final draft. Why speculate? The EVP's refuse to comment until they receive the final draft. Don't believe anything Jeremy says or tries to communicate.

Jeremy is a direct report to Stankey and the plans for his org and the locations he's closing are directly from an email he sent to everyone in his org on 5/17. That is not speculation. If you got that email you need to go to the site linked at the bottom because it has the impacted percentages and the cities by org all listed explicitly.

Excellent except for bullet 14 which is ridiculous.
