What are the chances that they are going to walk this back? I'm not sure they expected the backlash would be as bad as it is. I might be just projecting, but it seems to me they might lose many more people than they have hoped when they announced this, and good people at that.

Why do you think they open T in India? To replace US workers. When they said last year that they will release contractors and hire more employees they meant hire employees in India. And they just getting started. They will get 10:1 ROI on every guy hired in India. So if you think you can stay here even in the hub location you think twice. It is just matter of months, cause they want to move fast.
It is for Biden for his election year. They will force you all to move to the big city to stimulate their failing economy. Do not quit. That is what they want. Just stay and do nothing all day at the office.
Relocation benefits ran around $100k/employee the last time a department wanted to force all of us to Dallas. They back pedaled on the plan that time - likely a combination of the number in the department who just said no and the high cost of paying to relo everyone.
Bummer that they’re refreshing this push after discontinuing retiree healthcare subsidies for those eligible.
I don’t see them backing down on this thinly veiled headcount reduction initiative.
ok, I agree that T has plenty of deadweight ... but if anyone thinks that is how they resolve it, they're delusional
The company to survive needs a much more decentralized approach and a deep cultural shift+targeted layoffs, hiring and promos
Deadweight will swallow all the cr*p, no matter what, to stick around - and that is all we will have
Whoever has some market value will leave plus folks who are in ATT because they are bored being home retired
Prelude to bankruptcy sadly
"Let’s all be honest. Most jobs at T are going to be easily transferred to new hires or contractors in the hub cities with minimal impact. Within 2-4 months there will be no real impact due to lost employees."
This... With all those H1B Visa requests, your hub locations will be smelling like curry, feet, and a-s in no time and people will be doing the needful all over the place.
We will see about lazy for those that remain after the fallout. It will be like a one legged man in a bu-t kicking contest everyday, get ready.
Backlash from the lazy and unproductive workers.
Yes, definitely set in stone.
Every employee will be singing:
Granpa tell me 'bout the good ole days.

I'm not at T any longer, but have received no less than 10 text messages or call since this was announced. While no one is "indispensable" there are people that have a lot of critical knowledge that can't be replaced easily. They work systems that impact every revenue channel of the company and the "contractors" that support it are generally horrible because of the constant turnover - Consequently, there is more downtime and issues that all impact the business including customers. This will be significantly worse with this since the majority of the employee team that supports it is dispersed across cities/states not in one of the 9 locations. I've encouraged everyone even those not immediately impacted to start updating their resumes and applying for jobs because things are already horrible (these employees work long hours/weekends) and they'll get disastrous after this all goes into effect.
Don’t think for a second Stank cares about you! He’s already said we’ll be down 15k employees compared to last year. The same executives that got us into this debt debacle we are in are still running the show. He has spoken and great talent will quit over this foolish decision. It’s not changing anything being in an office! The executives are in the office daily, collaborating, and look how they’ve run this great company into the ground. Truly sad
We will fight this decision. Every action causes reaction. Death to the King!!!!
Is this already set in stone?
when they say things like 'this is how the company will win in the future' it tells me two things.
- we're not going to be winning
- they're ride or die on this plan.
"Lose too many workers?" Impossible, in the view of top execs at T. The more the better. They want 1/2 of current gone. Can always backfill with young/cheap or offshore if needed. They also want your building empty asap so they can dump it for pennies on the dollar.
0% chance on back tracking. In their eyes, the more that quits the better. So it sounds like a success so far as they’re concerned.
“Good luck to AT&T when we shift 22 people’s work to the remaining 23 people who are already struggling to keep up. We are the only group that does this for AT&T. When we all exit at the same time it’s going to be horrible.”

not set in stone. continue taking care of your kids and doing your side hustle. i’m sure it will all work out for you. certainly you deserve all those perks others don’t get in the rest of the workforce.
It’s done. We mimic Elon and he’s very vocal about the laptop crowd. This is happening so buckle up.
Legacy Ameritech crowd in the Midwest will be reduced to nothing.
48% of my departments will have to relocate. I’ll have already stated they will not do so. We just cut 35% of our headcount in February and are struggling to keep up as it is. Good luck to AT&T when we shift 22 people’s work to the remaining 23 people who are already struggling to keep up. We are the only group that does this for AT&T. When we all exit at the same time it’s going to be horrible.
Legg just doubled down on the decision starting out an email saying that he couldn't argue with logic that many going into the office makes no sense but ending it with wer're doing it anyway.
Set in stone. See you at the office!
Stankey would just as soon replace all existing managers with new, young employees earning less than half what existing employees make. He will give them a great title, they will love it.
Zero. Company is management heavy, we all know that. This is the first phase.
Stankey and the BOD could care less about backlash or about employee feedback in general. Never have and never will. They've basically burned billions of dollars doing stoopid sh--e and we are all going to pay for it one way or another. The DTV folks think they got a bad deal here recently when they were separated from AT&T, but I think they got a fresh start at the very least. They are probably sitting around right now laughing at this chaotic mess of a company.
If you think AT&T cares about anything, you are wrong. Execs get paid no matter what! Execs have golden parachutes. Execs look at bottom line, not that the company is actually providing great services. Stanley dropped the bo-b, he will go down with the ship.
Do you really think Stank and his minions care? It's obvious they want this company to fail. In the end, they will get millions of dollars in their pockets when T goes bankrupt.
Agree, I think even people in Dallas and Atlanta may see this move as a signal the company is not worth staying at and start looking outside.
