Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

If Oracle is my first job out of college how long should I stay for resume sake

Does 2 years look much better than 1.5 years? Does 3 years look a lot better than 2?

I'm in Sales. As long as you stay 1 year you're ready to move on. The only reason to stay longer is if you think you'll learn more and become more valuable to another employer by doing so.
If you can get promoted after the 1 year, that would be a reason to stick around too. But don't feel like you have to hang around past 1.5 years due to some kind of protocol. Plenty of people move on after 1 year.

Are you "class of"? If so then that's 2 strikes against you right out of the gate.

"2 years and you will find a decent tier-2 company job offer."

Or if not tier-2 then maybe tier-3 or tier-4.

Oracle is notorious for not rewarding employees once they are hired. College graduates with a high GPA are the exception. You'll probably get a good raise your first year and even stocks. It goes downhill from there. You'll do fine economically for 2 years so stay unless the group you are working for is getting decimated.

Leave as soon as you get a better role...Oracle is a cold company. Unless you really like it there...lol. Look at their vacation benefits.....thats speaks a lot. Folks with 5/10/15/20 years only get 3 weeks and 2 days with a mandatory 4 day vacation in December.

Given your tenure at Oracle I'd say you're qualified to work at a similar company, such as Compuware, but as far as other respected tech firms, not so much. Is it too late for you to go back and re-train for a different career track?

Disagree. The OP is qualified right now to work as a security guard at any of the FAANG companies.

Perhaps also anywhere in the food service, janitorial services or daycare industries.

Since you're early in your career, leaving after a year or better yet 18 months is perfectly acceptable, as long as the next job gives you more opportunity and experience.

As a rule, you should always target >= 18 months on any job. However when I've hired younger or mid-career professionals, three recent < or = 18 month stints can raise some concern, so if you're on your third 18 monther, try to stretch to two full years if you can... show's you're not a bad hire or tough to keep happy.

Of course, underlying importance is you have to have something to show for your time other than tenure, some kind of quantifiable impact.

Unfortunately, you poisoned your future in the tech industry the minute you accepted the job at Oracle.

Why leave? This is the one of the few places you could spend your entire working career at, and finish at the same pay with which you started!

Oof, a lot of negativity here. I have found Oracle is highly respected on the resume and have been approached to go other places because of my experience here. Don’t listen to the trolls. I say 2 years at least. (Depends what dept you are in)

Well, keep in mind that any Oracle skills you build will be of no use outside of Oracle. No companies care a hoot about Oracle cloud experience at all., since OCI is a red herring in the tech sector. Find something new and get out ASAP.

  1. 5 years isn’t much time in many areas, you are literally just getting up to speed. But yeah this is exactly the mentality that this company promotes. People coming in and on day 1 already planning their exit because they know ORACLE DOES NOT GIVE PROPER RAISES.

Lmao, who cares though, yes leave in 16 months once they train you.
