Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T “down 15,000 employees from last year to this year, when it's all said and done."

[Headline] AT&T shrinking office footprint, calls managers back to work most of week
[from Seeking Alpha]

AT&T (NYSE:T) is shrinking into fewer core offices and tightening return-to-work policies, moves that could put pressure on some managers further from the office.
The company is consolidating a heavy footprint into nine core offices, with its two main hubs in Dallas and Atlanta, CEO John Stankey told Bloomberg in an interview.
And it will require more than 60,000 managers to show up at the office in person at least three days a week, starting in July in those two hubs, and by Labor Day in the other core offices (in Los Angeles; Seattle; Washington; San Ramon, Calif.; St. Louis; Middletown, N.J.; and Bedminster, N.J.).
Some will look to take advantage of "generous" relocation services, Stankey said: About 85% of affected people live near one of the new core offices, meaning 15% are further afield.
And “If they want to be a part of building a great culture and environment they’ll come along on these adjustments and changes. Others may decide, given the station of life they are in, that they want to move in a different direction.”
Any attrition would feed an ongoing cost cut program, and Stankey said in the interview that AT&T (T) will probably be "down 15,000 employees from last year to this year, when it's all said and done."
AT&T stock was down 1.8% at midday Tuesday in a generally lower Communications sector.

Only 15K? T is never going to become profitable again.

Sounds like more DEI initiatives. Only urban centers left. Rural employees must go.

Lest there be any doubt about what this is all about.

THEY WANT YOU TO QUIT.

How could they possibly make this any clearer?

What about those employees who work in states where there is no hub office or core office?

This whole policy is about to cut 15,000 or more employees without having to give them severance. Guarantee policy will be relaxed once Stinkey has met this goal. No one, including management, likes to go to noisy, overcrowded, congested building -- which all will be, given that they sold huge chunks of real estate since 2020.

He’s going to lose a lot more than 15k employees. Good luck to those that remain. I’m where I’ve always been, work out of the same building I was hired to work out of, but I’ll tell them just like last time they tried this hub city mess, I’m not moving.

The AT&T BOD has decided that moving the CEO position to South Chicago would help to return the company to it's glory days. Effective 07/01/23, Stankey must relocate to South Chicago or risk losing his job! OUCH! He may not choose to relocate due to the station of life he is in and thus decide to take a different direction in life..

Is Stankey for real?

I don’t like having to go back to an office, but I’ll dutifully work 9-5, take an hour lunch and bounce, just like we used to pre-covid. No more early morning, meetings over my lunch hour or any of that. If you think I’m moving to Dallas, forget about it.

"Others may decide, given the station of life they are in, that they want to move in a different direction.”

yup, these are the older ones who spent their whole life building a home and career around their location where uprooting themselves for a job that may last 6 months longer is not attractive. They also happen to be the ones just a few years short of that "rule of 75." Prime targets for cuts pretty soon.
