There are no jobs. Wait, let me rephrase that. There are some jobs, but there are way more people trying to fill those positions, so every offer I've gotten so far has been lowballed into oblivion. So if we're laid off, we'll be entering one of the worst job markets for employees in who knows how long. And that's sending my anxiety to new levels.

I left for a smaller telco engineering firm a few months ago upon hearing about another reorg that would have effectively doubled my already doubled workload from prior layoffs. The market was bad then. It is so much worse now. My current company just did their first layoff exercise in 20 years. Most companies that deal with broadband, fiber, or general internet deployment aren’t hiring. The companies that are hiring are the ones that deploy or engineer fiber long hauls between data centers. The pay is definitely not worth it because work is awful since it’s all non-franchise and the clients (Meta/Google/Microsoft) are miserable and out of touch with reality. That and the municipalities are catching on that all of these long haul fiber backbone permits are for data center development they’re all giving pushback or straight up won’t approve permits.
It’s rough out there yall. Take care of yourselves.
