Beware of broadening assignments and mobility

The big push for broadening assignments and mobility is a trap. Supervisors want to move people into their groups as new Pip material so they don’t have to put their buddies in the lower rankings. Avoid at all costs being the new guy. If you are upstream and your new group is full of downstreamers there is zero hope. New project with downstream project manager who needs your expertise? Run don’t walk away. Total trap. You will do the work and get no reward other than a pip while the downstreamers take the credit.

@dt excellent points. The way they treat us is just terrible.

GP President sent out an email to all of GP about mobility and it being important. What a joke.
Well how about you do something about the terrible expat policy. And that there is no extra hardship premium to rotate to places like PNG or Mozambique. It’s the same as if you rotated same schedule to the GoM ( Excuse me, the GoA)

Also you get dinged if you’re not mobile when your kids are in high school even if you have moved a lot and been flexible before now.

Meanwhile many execs/hipos are not mobile and they still get exec compensation. Yeah sometimes they get bumped 1 category but they still get good bonuses & RSUs since they are hipo. And Then there is us stuck at 27 or 28, no salary increases, no bonus, peanuts for stock (with long vesting), etc.

Make sure you submit some tough questions for the November employee forum!

@bx is your career owned by either one? Some Engineers in UNCON are now ranked with GP and you can guess how that is going for the engineers! GP is no better. Engineering is seen as a problem and not valued at all. You can deliver everything on time and still they will tank your ranking. Best to stay in the group that owns your career. People who never leave Houston and their career owning group seem to last the longest.

100%.

Happened to me - “broadening assignment”, should have never been offered the role, half of me thinks it was on purpose to be the sacrificial lamb —> PIP’d.

I was offered Uncon or GP. Thoughts on which is safer?

I'm old so they don't talk to me about career but some of the younger people in my group used to have discussions about management or technical lead opportunities. Over the last 3 years those discussions have changed to lateral moves that "broaden your knowledge" prior to leadership positions. They justify it by saying it will make you a stronger manager, more likely to be able to stand out at the next level.

I have seen Supervisors PIP a new guy to protect his long term team of friends, and I have seen a Supervisor PIP a guy that left his team 01 February so not have to lose anyone on remaining team.

The PIP layoff cuts deeper every year, even having a PIP layoff at &100 oil.

Our Executives will burn in heII for what they are doing to good employees and employees’ families.
