I see many colleagues serving as judges, chairs, and co‑chairs at ACS and AIChE conferences. Does that actually help your XOM career ?

Think about it this way: if you are interviewing for a job outside of Exxon and are asked to put together a 15 - 45 min talk on your work, what are you going to be able to show? If all your projects are strictly internal you are sc--wed. Anyone can say they are an expert in xyz at Exxon but if you can't show any of your work hiring committees have to take your word for it, which isn't going to make you stand out at all.

It depends on if your boss wants it to. They rank people based on they want them to be ranked and then find criteria to justify it. I've gone through years where I was told "participation in external organizations" was valued. Then the next year it wasn't. You're wasting your time trying to figure out if something is valuable to your career.
@OP publications, presenting in technical seminars, patents yes. Being organizer of a technical seminar or on editorial board of a well-respected journal also helps.
I've started doing those types of things strictly to expand my profile outside of EM. Definitely amping up my job search given the current state of this toxic cesspool.
Exxon recently quit paying for the membership dues of employees on code committees. Strange thing to do when we are gutting the GPs and going with industry standards.
It will kit help you at all. Exxon only cares about what is done internally and politically.
No, they don't… However, they significantly boost the individual's outside network for future job opportunities.....

I’m personally not going to hire an engineer based solely on their corporate experience, especially from a place like Exxon.
I am active with that sort of thing and publishing, etc. It doesn't help your XOM career, but if you're a millennial or younger you aren't going to retire from this company. Having a network and projects you can share/demonstrate outside of the company is huge for when XOM inevitably decides it's your turn for the gallows.
