Time off policy vesting schedule

Just wanted to check, will there be any more changes to the pto policy going forward? Is there a max limit on how many days can be used for a bereavement leave? Is there a vesting schedule for our bereavement days? Is it based on length of service? Do we accrue at different rates based on the relation of the family member (parent vs grandparent)?

@ck that’s the best laugh. I’ve had in a while. Morale is up and benefits are improving? The company has worked hard to make this a decent place? Stop it! I can’t get off the floor from laughing so hard.

@ek yes we actually can. I can deny your a-s based on business need. Per HR so keep that in mind

@cw yes it actually can get rejected. Its a courtesy to approve not a requirement. And yes parent does get more than certain family . You would know if you read the policy. And in most cases its “up to 10 days”. Doesnt mean you get 10 days. And per hr its intended for people to use if they are attending or planning a funeral or celebration of life. You shouldnt be use ot cause you need an excuse to not be here. Tf with you people

@dd managers can’t override corporate policy. Go to my source and type in bereavement it will bring up the policy.

@dc this is helpful thank u. does this apply to every team or just certain ones? I’ve heard HR policies vary by team sometimes. Like can’t managers override HR policies if team needs depend on it?

10 days for immediate family, 1 day for anyone else.

@d0 I’d rather have more work for a day or two than lose an relative or friend.

By the way if the remaining coworkers cannot cover a week of less for bereavement, that issue lies with the manager. Either your coworkers are incompetent or more likely, the team needs more employees.

Bereavement isn’t the only instance where a person could unexpectedly be out for a few days.

@cw has it occurred to you others don’t want to end up with more work so you can take a day off? The rest of us are dealt the same hand and didn’t chose layoffs on our team either. Take your day and return to work like the rest of us. BTW we ALL deal with the same nonsense, you’re not special

@cs really? You’re that stingy? So what an uncle gets a day, parent gets two? Who decides this? And depending on approval? So a day off could get rejected if you don’t have enough employees? Unbelievable

Not sure there’s a different policy for parent vs extended family but it may depend on who you report to. Parent may be treated with more leniency, extended family you may need to go through the proper chain of command and submit something more formal for approval especially if they don’t live near you. Leaving for a funeral for a day is different than leaving the state for a few days. Just depends on how it impacts your work especially since a lot of teams are in a bit of a crunch right now with all the layoffs. Just my opinion

Maybe if you were a decent employee you could look this up on your own. Be thankful for what you get. The company has worked hard to make things better here. It’s not perfect but we strive daily to make this a better place. Morale is up, benefits are improving. Most employees I know who complain about the lack of benefits don’t bother looking into them. Maybe some of you need a vesting schedule so you know what hard work is ya slackers

What do you mean by bereavement vesting schedule?? You shouldn’t have to earn your days for bereavement based on your length of time with the company. So what, in your first year you only get a portion of the benefit??

At the risk of identifying myself: I was able to take 4+ weeks off for family/cultural rituals and travel back, along with utilizing some (WFA) time. My manager was extremely reasonable and accommodating throughout the process.

TBH, BNY is just another employer, but family IS family. They ALWAYS come first. Not only in a loss but for anything. And managers are also humans. If they are not, one should not stay here. HR, in my case, was not even in the picture. But this was before all this BS about RTO.

Pretty sure if you search bereavement on the homepage you will see the policy. I did that a couple years ago after my uncle passed. You don’t get a specific amount of bereavement days you accrue annually. It doesnt make sense that you would have a set number of days. It’s based on relation. I don’t remember the exact amount but for a friend you might get 1 day and grandparent 5 days. But obviously you might need more days depending on closeness and travel. So you’d talk to your manager first so they’re on the same page.

Reach out to HR. They should be able to assist with these questions. Also we don’t have a vesting schedule, at the moment
