Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

Toy to Joy minus the Joy

At what point does leadership admit the entertainment strategy isn’t working?

CP keeps getting squeezed while resources continue going toward chasing another Barbie movie moment. Barbie was lightning in a bottle. Instead of strengthening the businesses that actually generate consistent revenue, leadership seems determined to recreate something that may not be repeatable.

Then come the layoffs, reorganization and promotions at the top, while everyone else is expected to do more with less.

“Toy to Joy” sounds great in a presentation. Employees are still waiting to see the Joy part.

Remember the CEO is making Mattel a IP driven company, not a toy company. He doesn’t realize there is only 2 IP worth anything, Barbie and Hot Wheels. The rest isn’t worth much. Matchbox movie? Magic 8 ball, Major Mat Mason, View Master all these great movies coming soon to save Mattel? Where’s the He Man bump?

The Barbie movie gave Mattel stock a short bump, it wasn’t a game changer. Why does it keep getting talked about like it did amazing things for the company. I think the CEO got his name in lights but it didn’t really do much for the company.

Mattel has been transforming from a traditional toy manufacturer into an IP-driven toy and family entertainment powerhouse for nearly a decade at this point. I think we just need to trust the plan, eventually something has to work.

Sounds like business school bull$hit jargon. Mattel is a difficult place that enables misguided leadership to make money hand over fist then bail. If you are not one making the rules, take what you can get, be that contacts, industry knowledge or whatever and move on.

Barbie Movie was good entertainment, but did not raise total revenue. Mattel has been mired at 5.4-5.5 billion annual revenue for years and years!
