Is it normal to be expected to do 50-60 hour weeks?

They pay me for 8 hours a day...i give them 8. If they want to waste that time by making me sit through pointless meetings st-----g each others egos, im fine with that. once that 8 hours hits, im gone.
45-50 depending on workload.
I used to work 50-60 hours a week. But to not only be Tops in Production and Quality, but also the person everyone goes too when they don't know what to do, I was still rated as a 2. The person that was rated a 1 (we only get 1 for each site of more than 60 staff), and whose production and quality were average, got the 1 for being a BFF to the boss and one who steals others ideas. Now, I'm no longer ki-ling myself or being helpful. Waiting for my 2% raise.
@cf Same boat, same attitude. If WHERE I'm doing my job suddenly means more than actually getting the job done as I had from home well before Covid was even a thought, short of an extraordinary circumstance, that's all I'm giving anymore, period. $5 a gallon gas certainly isn't a motivator either.
I used to work over 40 hours a week. After the form-over-function mandate, I probably do about half of what I used to. Pride in my company? Gone. Motivation? Gone. Confidence we care about the work? Gone.
All my US Bank investments? Sold.
I work 8 to 4, take 1 hour for lunch.
Not working more than required
No benefits, but more work
Yes, it's normal. Gotta hit those "stretch goals" amirite?
It's not worth it. It will never be worth it. Despite any value your individual efforts may provide, to USB you are just a discretionary expense.
I agree with the one who said nothing has changed. I see those that worked 50+ hours pre RTO are still doing it and those that worked 40 or less are still doing the same. Nothing has changed since we came back to the office. We have been hiring, no layoffs and no one has quit. RTO is not the main topic of discussion at happy hour anymore . Everyone is more angry at someone else than MC. But MC kisses the orange hand that feeds them. I remember someone posting before the election that once old sleepy pumpkin face came into office he would put a stop to RTO, send all the Indians back to India. Ha!
I work as much as possible daily until I'm at a breaking point to appease the MC and GK and then I wake up the next day and ask if I can have another. This is the US Bank (of India) way.
40
I could easily do lesser and getaway but I had a good upbringing unlike GK and her m-o-r-o-n committee. So I don’t volunteer to overwork but I also don’t steal from the company.
When I was a remote employee I easily put in 50-60 hours. After RTO and the nonsensical reasons for making me come into an office where no one else on my team resides, I started putting in the bare minimum of 40.
In the last 20 years working in tech it has always, always been 50+ hours. Nothing has changed for the worse or the better. Good people have left in good times and bad. HB1 has been around forever too and lots of competent and incompetent contractors. I don’t know it any different. As far as working from home I probably worked 60 hours a week and I would never do that again. We have had some huge layoffs. I believe 2018 was especially nasty, but layoffs are common for USB since I’ve been here. I think if tech job market opens up, we may see an exodus, but as of the last year, no one has quit on my team and no one is working more or less than normal. If they want us to quit, it ain’t happening. I am looking around but pay cut would hurt and I got two kids in college.
My weeks fluctuate. If I need to put in 50+ to hit a deadline I will... But you better believe I'm putting in a 25 hr week at some point to get my time back.
@bh they don't care about retaining good people. Any person that leaves of their own accord is great for them. No severance. They'll just send that job overseas for pennies.
I consistently work 40 hr weeks but occasionally more as needs require (e.g. deploys or oncall work). I am not compensated enough to just willingly work more than 40/hrs in a given week on a regular basis. They can pay fairly, hire more people, or most likely - lose great people.
@OP Occasionally, I work close to 50 hours but it’s never been the norm. I’m on a very large team and no one has ever had to work over 40 hours very often. I think the tech guys do all the long hours, but never the Scrum Masters.
Usually 7 to 3ish, although typically log off early on Fridays.
It's normal if you let it be. Until you let the boat sink, they have no reason to change.
Being exempt only means they don't have to pay us overtime. I don't see a problem with occasionally putting it a few hours beyond 40 here and there, but when it's the norm despite effective time management and quality work, that is a management problem, not a me problem.
These days, 40 hours. I used to do 50+ a week (I've been with USB for 15+ years), but ever since the last major leadership change my GAF for this place and desire to put extra hours in is gone.
bootlickers, the both of you...executive compensation not quite high enough for you yet?
Yes that’s normal for this bank. I easily put in 55 to 65 every week.
