Either do it or don't, but keeping us guessing is getting really annoying. I'd like to be able to fully focus on my work, not have to balance between my productivity and worrying about the proverbial axe above my head all the time.

There is absolutely NO reason they couldn't be straight forward about firings. And it would cost them NOTHING to guarantee you a job for a year or 2. But that might require a little honesty, humanity, planning and commitment...
@ds Hi. Any chance to chat off to the side? I am interested in hearing more about how you went about successfully getting a lawyer and fighting via the legal system to get a severance check. I have a feeling I might be part of the February wave, and almost no one in my location gets severance anymore.
Layoffs are not a rumor at BNY. They have happened, are happening and will continue to happen. If you are laid off in a workforce reduction where receive full severance as per policy not much you can do about that other than chalk it up to a bad experience. That said, this is not what is happening in most cases. Instead, they will fictionalize a performance review, catch you on RTO, forced relocations, etc and pay little to no severance stating you are at fault in some manner. I would encourage anyone that goes through this to fight back. Contact a few labor attorneys and hire one you are comfortable with. I did this and they cut me a check for a year salary without going to court. They have no mechanism to challenge you given no effective legal department. For all of you still there in US I wish you the best except former Goldman Sachs employees. They don’t need my wishes and will be just fine!

There will always be layoffs. Do your job and keep looking elsewhere. There's absolutely no reason to be hunting for layoff rumors. The answer is yes. There will be layoffs. When? Who cares. The axe will fall every month, every period.
Don't give this place more energy than needed.
Who the fu-k wants to fully focus on the work, for this cesspool? Executive compensation not quite high enough for you yet?
