Best thing that ever happened to an ex employee? It would be personal and different for each depending on the specific way they were or were not treated.
For most, in general, the best thing would be chain of events that begins with the peace felt after waking up the next morning without stress induced back pain and headaches brought on by passive aggressive managers who motivate using intimidation or veiled threats and warnings.
The first step out if the bed is awkward due to the inability to touch the floor. But once they realize they are walking on air due to the weight that has been lifted off of their shoulders, the peaceful, easy feeling shifts to pure joy.
Then the realization that being free, poor and maybe homeless is better than being a chained, stepping stone for cowards who build their future off of the carcasses of their direct reports, the joy shifts to hope.
As interactions increase with the vast portion of the population that have never experienced or even knew there were companies, as toxic as modern day Verizon, they realize that they can have career with another company where they can be valued and respected for who they are and what they offer. Then the hope becomes enlightenment.
But there is still work that will need be done to over come the deep rooted PTSD from years of manipulation and abuse.
Once it is realized that not everyone that raises a hand intends to strike them and not everyone that praises them is only doing it with the ulterior motive of drawing them closer to put them in chains, then the peace, joy, hope, enlightenment becomes freedom.
I guess maybe. Who knows. Your mileage may vary.
