I was in a meeting this week and 40% of those in the room were principal engineers or senior principal engineers. Collectively they knew zero about what was being discussed. There was me and one other person who actually understood the technical details. After the meeting he shared that he too had been rocketed to the bottom of the assessments.

We know more than you've ever forgotten.
At one time, titles of distinguished engineers, principal engineers, etc were given to those who earned it in their disciplines. They are true recognized experts both inside and outside the company. Criteria to be promoted into these roles include business acumen, sphere of influence, communication, and other soft skills.
Unfortunately, here is a proliferation of these titles over the last few years. Titles are cheap and it certainly stoke egos. These role come with responsibilities and sometimes that puts the person in the line of fire.
Forget the title and strive for growth, job satisfaction, and compensation. In the long run that is better. Your colleagues will long remember you when you do a good job. That is worth more than cheap titles that no one will remember after you leave that role. Excellence and respect is hard earned.
I am surprised that the 40% was not 80% principal engineers in the meeting that you reference. We are top heavy on late career engineers/managers who attend technical meetings that they know nothing about.
Cracks are showing left right and center but the message isn’t getting through to HR or Senior Leaders. There is already a visible impact on safety, productivity and definitely morale (which they don’t care about). Something bad and big will happen and they will blame the workforce versus taking responsibility as always

Rockefeller would be proud. Why are you upset? You get paid (I do) to do nothing. We both get that pension. Just show up to work.
They (executives) truly believe you can run an oil refinery from the other side of the world using third rate talent.
Apparently the billions in profit were just not quite enough.
We no longer promote employees because they are hard working or knowledgeable in their fields. We only want compliant employees who will parrot whatever the latest acronym of the day.
Rockefeller would have been proud.
