data scientists

What exactly do these guys do? They're always in POC mode, churning out white papers that nobody really reads. Do they actually add any value?.

They are typically from the subcontinent and know zero about what they are supposed to create deep analysis for.

It's always w h i t e w i m m i n who lean on them. They believe the fraudulant or extended fake claims on their resumes.

Have you read their findings? They're incredible, brilliant papers.

I have learned over the years that data scientists hate building products, and hate being expected to have software engineering competency. Some companies understand this and leverage DS to figure out how machine learning can solve a problem and engineers to apply that by creating a product / solution.
We have 5x the number of DS that we need, in a protected org where getting a patent or paper written is their goal. Engineering is capable of applying solutions from outside the org to problems, and measuring the accuracy and performance of the software solution built with the ai/ml learnings externally sourced, but so far business and DS are blocking that and forcing us to wait for DS to do the monotonous eval work and keep the accountability. I think good DS have left / are still leaving / will leave for places where novel problems still exist, and where engineers build tools for the monotonous work and free them up for the research types of work they want to and should be doing.
