Method 1: Wi-Fi Calling (Standard Starlink Dish)Most people using Starlink at a home, remote cabin, or boat make calls by routing traditional cellular calls over the Starlink internet connection.
The Connection Path: Your phone connects to your Starlink router via Wi-Fi. The Starlink dish on the ground sends data up to low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which beam it down to a ground station connected to the terrestrial internet.
Routing the Call: Your mobile carrier treats your Starlink internet connection like any other Wi-Fi network. The call travels over the internet to your carrier’s core network and out to the standard phone system.
Requirements: You must turn on Wi-Fi Calling in your phone settings while connected to the Starlink network (and your mobile carrier must support the feature)

Starlink does not provide a satellite phone. It currently provides an internet connection off a router, just like any old internet provider.

Somebodies lying to you. That docket number is a petition to authorize a sale of assets. There is no agreement in that docket to maintain copper services. If you have some type of link to prove otherwise please provide it.

So, the satellite provides an internet correction correct? That internet connection from the router connected to the satellite provides a wifi signal correct? The cell phone connects to the router on the wifi signal correct? Then, imagine this, the cell phone uses a wifi signal to make a phone call...mind blown eh? If you are smart enough to follow along...which you obviously arent, were not talking about the future of starlink cellular service. Were talking about current cellular carriers using their cell phone to connect to the satellite internet signal to make a "wifi" phone call. The same as you would from your house connected to your own internet. Damn, you are a d-mb mfer.

....yes it does. Lumen has an agreement to maintain copper facilities as part of the Forged Fiber transaction. They have to maintain minimum headcount and fund field ops. UTC 250544.

Minnesota has a similar agreement.

Other than the forged fiber agreement doesnt include anything copper related. Its just the fiber leaving the co's and the co support. The field is a depreciating asset. The money is in the building.
It will all coincide. Once lumen is finally able to cut off ALL the pots att will get the central offices and Lumen will be out of the wire business. Its been a 3 year plan all along.

OP is correct about Washington at least, can't speak about any other state. There's a UTC document outlining the agreement Lumen has with the state which includes a minimum amount of money to be allocated yearly for 7 years for hiring techs, rehabbing and replacing cable and keeping a minimum headcount.

Washington will likely be the last state forcing Lumens hand 2 years from now.

Really? Thats exactly what starlink is currently offering with their service to cell carriers. Wifi calling off the starlink network. Ya know, high tech stuff like no cell network in range so you make calls over wifi type of technical kind of stuff. The service you're talking about is T-Mobile and Starlink partnership to offer SMS and MMS . Eventually voice and data. I think that's going to be scrapped.

Starlink hasn't released the cell service yet. That will happen sometime in 2027.

"get in place" most likely refers to brownfields. Once the fiber is in its done. The rest is customer centric. There will always be greenfield projects or "putting more fiber into new places"....The problem with your argument is you only have 11 years and youre no longer union. Brownfields are almost done and depending on the economy which is sh-t right now the greenfields will slow down considerably. To anyone, not just you, in case you havnt noticed the future is customer self install. Once theres a drop and entry into a house they dont need a tech. Eventually, for new installs and repairs it will be contracted out to a skeleton work force. The same as all construction is now. As a side note....40 years ago no one thought shipping, trucking and cable warehouse jobs would go to contractors. 30 years ago no one thought line crews and splicing would go to contractors. How far in the future is install/maint gone to contractors

But it is implied that starlink is going to offer internet and cell for 19.99. Doesnt say anything about rural pots customers exclusively. Theres no crystal ball there. Many rural customers have already gone to hughes or starlink and it has nothing to do with cell service in 2027. They could have cell service now with starlink and any carrier connected to it. And many do. Go door to door. You'll have more luck with sales

Starlink is for the remaining rural customers who have no options but POTS.
Lumen will use this to ki-l remaining copper customers before 2029.

Or, realistically who would pay 130 bucks a month plus 10 dollar rental for 400mbps or buy your equipment for 349 bucks? Those are the current prices but if were talking what ifs..what if verizon or att or tmobile offered cell and internet for 18.95 per month. Who would choose starlink? How about 14.95 if were getting stupid?

Depends (my daily choice of fashion wear as well) on what someone refers to as "paid" on call rotation. Also depends on someones version of Enterprise and Fiber work as well. As mentioned, i work with on the daily and been offered to move to the Enterprise equivalent of my represented position, under the guise of future job security. But, other than that... u r flat out wrong my friend and obviously not someone in the field.

@k6 Well not sure how long the fiber plant takes to “get in place”. I do know I have been here for 11 years and no sign of letting up. It seems to me this page has a bunch of jaded copper techs bi--hing about not being able to work on F1 pairs anymore.

@fg unfortunately none of what you said was true. Pay has always been higher than union wage, those reasons should be obvious. There is a regular on call rotation paid. Most the equipment nowadays is the best in the business for Lumen.

Different generations. Some are burned out from 20 plus years of work. Years of 60 plus hours a week, weekends, nights, holidays. Those days are over. The people burned out after 3 years werent meant for the job if theyre burned out from actually working 40 hours and getting called out once a month.

Weird...40 plus years and you think Lumen is doing work in california as an ilec? There never has or ever will be a lumen employee doing copper or fiber for that matter in california. Perhaps some enterprise work but not on the regulated side. Maybe you should have asked your "buddies" first.

If you want to take a pay cut and lose job security. On top of that: you have to be available 24/7 for anything from a fiber cut, to environmental alarms on antiquated equipment, to management triage scenarios due to lack of knowledge and a predefined plan. I have worked along side of a few of them here lately, they are burned out by year 3. The new employment lifespan of any tech positions within this company, just as designed!

The other option is move over to the fiber side. There are plenty of tech jobs in Enterprise.
