Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Can anybody explain me why the PIP?

What is the point. All they have to do is wait for 3 months and LR you without any explaination.

Pip: manager can get a new req
LR: manager will not get a new req

The problem with a PIP, a legitimate PIP, is that it requires more work from your manager than an LR would. Managers are for sh*t for actually managing their team, their team's performance. In so very many cases they only meet with their team a couple of times a year.

You can have some genuinely good managers that are trying to manage and develop their team, or you can just wait for the next LR and give up the folks you didn't bother trying to improve. Option B is so much easier.

@js what is the severance PIP package? 3,4,5 months?

@OP Simply.. PIP process (or "documented coaching") is less expensive. With LR they need to make the package big enough to most likely escape lawsuits. With PIP they have (granted manufactured) "evidence" you didn't meet the grade, give you a much smaller package and out the door you go.

LR is the more humane way of disposing talent.

They need extra legal justification because it's illegal discrimination to target American worker and not those on visas. And the US governments is starting to talk tough about this.

Does that mean people who are letting go through PIP doesn't get paid any compensation?

Yes, why should incompetence get paid?

When can we expect this LR to happen?

This is not an LR. Identifying incompetence is an ongoing effort.

In ancient times you just fired people. Or burned down the building with employees locked inside. Possibly chained to their workstations.

Labor gained power and even when there were real problem children it became more difficult to fire people without further legal entanglement so permanent layoffs became the solution. John Chambers' idol Jack Welch optimized the process through rank-n-yank where the bottom 10% we laid off every year. Chambers tried the same thing at Cisco with the bottom 5% for a time.

As the power of labor continued to weaken PIP became a faster, cheaper way to fire people. When firing people no longer has a legal cost most layoffs and PIPs will go away. Once pesky regulations about smoke detectors and sprinkler systems go away...

@OP

Performance-related, so generally ineligible for severance. All that senior executive compensation has to come from somewhere...

there is a world outside of the US where there are more employee protection laws and it's easier for companies to fire you for performance reasons instead of a random restructure. with the performance stuff, they can fully control the narrative and always say you're not meeting the bar.

PIP is quick, painful for employee, joyful to few devilish Mgr, saves tonnes of cash to Cisco compared to LR.

Cisco preferred method, it got to document against future lawsuits. Fight like he-l.
