251 permanent layoffs at PayPal’s San Jose headquarters, filed with California employment regulators this week.
The WARN notice is advance notice: the 251 San Jose layoffs are scheduled to take effect Oct. 30, 2026, per the filing made this week. California’s WARN law requires 60 days’ notice before separation, so those employees are still on payroll until then.

This is for the Aug. 31 layoffs. The employees who were laid off on Aug. 31 will remain on payroll through Oct. 30, which accounts for the 60-day notice period under WARN.
Companies are generally required to provide WARN notice 60 days before the employment termination date, so Oct. 30 is the last date for the same group of employees impacted on Aug. 31. It doesn’t mean there’s another round of layoffs happening on Oct. 30.
A WARN notice is generally triggered when the number of affected employees at a U.S. site meets certain thresholds (50+ usually). It looks like California was the only location that qualified, which would make sense given the size of the workforce there.

Unlike frontline support, this specific US WARN filing heavily targets higher-tier engineering, middle management, and senior director roles as part of their organizational flattening.
This is a drop in the bucket, expect this fire drill every 6 months for the next 2-3 years.
Just to be clear, this is about what happended on Aug31, Monday. i.e officially 251 people were impacted on Aug31 at San Jose site.
